Front bearing change - what gets replaced?

So i'm going to change front bearings on both sides on "Herbie" (930 81')

I have bought:

1. 2 x Inner and outer bearings (obviously)
2. 2 x "Front wheel seals" (metal things with rubber inside)
3. 2 x "Front wheel O-ring" (small rubber O-rings, ~1 inch dia.)

Is this enough or is there something else that is rutinely replaced?

you should also replace the bearing "races"
which you need to tap out with a soft drift
or have pressed out.new bearing in old races
just seems to be wasting money.

New bearing races come wiht the new bearings. If you tap them out and in yourself, just be very careful and patient not to damage the soft aluminum hub. Some folks like to put the races in the freezer and put the hub in the oven at about 300 degrees before installation. This does make it easier.

Wouldn't you put the hub in the freezer (to shrink) and races in the oven (to expand) ?!

IT will be a lot easier on your hubs if you degrease them and heat them to 350 degrees F for twenty minutes, before trying to remove the old bearing races.

This is also the time to have your rotors turned or replaced if needed.

There is no mention of "race" on this "front axle" parts page:

The races are the trapezoidal cross-section outer parts of the bearings. If you unwrap them, you will find that the outer races are not attached to the rollers or inner race in any way, and can be separated very easily for installation!

I had my hubs hot-soaked in an aluminium-safe bath. That pulled off the grease and heated the hubs for a nice, safe punch job. Do not screw up the hub, whatever you do. And don't put too much grease in there; just as much as your specs advise. Readjust after 250 miles.

BTW: do you have the half-moons in the hub that permit a punch to be placed behind the races? Check that out.

The rubber o-rings go behind the spacer on your spindle. (you dont need the o-ring unless the spacer is worn)
The grease seal rides on this surface, so make sure you dont have deep grooves worn into it.

1. o-ring 999 701 084 50
2. spacer 901341 623 00
See Pelican tech article on strut replacement pictures 17,18 and 19 I believe. They show the spacer and the mangled o-ring.
Also when removing the races tap (wack) them alternating side to side. (half moon cut outs). When installing the races make sure that they go in straight.
Also you might consider getting a set of bearing drivers for installing the races.
