oil temp guage is pegged

Bought a new used SC recently and I'm picking it up and driving it back to Ga next week and one issue that came up during PPI was the oil temp guage stays pegged showing hot but car ran in normal temps at all times. I plan to drive it back but not without fixing the issue. What should I plan on buying or sourcing that I need b4 getting there? What tools will I need? Test equip, wrenches, parts, ect. What is likely my problem? How do I trace down the problem? Thanks for the help in advance. Ps. The car is in Herndon Va incase anyone is local and might lend a hand. I'm willing to pay of course or buy lunch minimum? Looking at the weather before picking a day to fly up. Ideas or suggestion appreciated

Sender could be bad,....wiring could be problematic,..or the damned gauge has an internal problem.

As DRACO mentioned, grounds are the first thing to check!

That's an irritating problem, for sure. I'd carry a damned IR temp sensor with me, should you not get it resolved.

BEST,..and good luck!

Yup, grounds or the senders. A voltmeter is your friend.

I just fixed mine with identical symptoms.
After checking the wiring and replacing the sender twice ( there are two senders with different ranges) a gauge swap fixed the problem after I changed the sender back to the original one again.

Cheers

I had a problem where the temperature gauge seemed to work normally but would guy into the red after about 10 minutes of driving. Scared the crap out of me. I verified the engine temps with an infrared thermometer, tested the sender using boiling water. In the end, it was the wiring behind the gauge. I moved the gauge a bit and the problem went away. It's a real rats nest back there and I didn't have the guts to dig in further.

Sometimes you can pull the connector and clean the inside of the connector and the post with some emery cloth and it will start working correctly.
