transmision mount problem

today i went to change the trans mounts. the first one went fine. the other when i went to remove the center bolt it came out real easy. i did not think much of it. i put the new mount in but could not get the bolt to start.
the bolt had a thin wire rapped around it. turned out to be the threads from the nut end.

i am going to try to run a tap in the hole and a die on the bolt.if this does not work can i put a heli coil in there? the PO must have air gun the he-- out of it.. has anyone had to fix a trans mount like this? thanks carl

the last one in is always the one that strips, try to loosen all the bolts (support the engine) and start all 4 bolts. sounds like the trans mount might be stripped, i have seen oversized bolts for this problem, might search for this

don't use a tap, use a thread chaser. a tap can cut up the threads and make it worse. a tap is designed to cut new threads whereas a chaser is designed to clean existing threads. you can get chasers on amazon.com.

If you are talking about the 2 large bolts that go through the centre of the trans mounts into the blind holes, then once stripped its time to repair with a helicoil or timesert. The threaded section is only about 10mm deep. You must make sure the bolts do not bottom out when torquing up or the threads will pull. Its easy to leave a washer out or use a replacement bolt thats a little too long. The originals have a nice tapered point but I always get these bolts started by hand with the 2 bolts holding the trans mounts in place loose, to avoid crossthreading. This happened to me and I used a helicoil, been fine for 15 years now.

Wow, I just ordered new engine/trans mounts. Will be extra careful on the trans bolts! Thanks!
