air vent filter?

Hello All,

When I open my fresh air to the defrost, especially on high, it sends bits of crumbling black foam all over my dash. I am planning on pulling everything apart and cleaning it out but wanted to see if there is a filter I should order ahead of time to replace whatever is crumbling ?

The black foam is the seal around the vent door.

Not to thread jack - but every time I put the heat on defrost, it puts a film on the windshield that appears pretty noticeable after even 30 minutes. I don't often smell oil in the cockpit, and I don't have any major oil leaks that I know of. Is this normal? It's bad enough that I carry a towel with me to wipe down the lower part of the windshield almost daily.

I don't get any oil on the windshield. I would guess you have oil inside your heat exchangers?

Yep, most likely oil inside the heat exchangers. It's common for oil leaks to deposit oil on top of the HE's, and if they are perforated due to rust or damage, the oil can make it's way inside. Another way is if you have a leak in your exhaust manifold, oil from blowby could make it into the HE's. Or, maybe somehow you've got some kind of oily liquid (brake fluid from the nearby reservoir?) inside the heated/fresh air flapper boxes or related plumbing. Your symptom is absolutely not normal.

+1 for oil in the exchanger. I dripped like crazy from the lower cover (in early 12 I use the silicone gaskets but the nuts were almost loose when I took the covers off last week, will crank them up a bit when I put them back on).

These SSIs are relatively new, I pressure test them with a shop vac and on both side, they leak air where the 3 exhaust pipes goes in, so the oil made is way in probably when the engine is turn off. No leak on the exhaust side and they are dry as a bone.
