68 idiot light on

Gen light came on regardless of key location. Cannot start engine. Whats strange is that I have been restoring this car. Had it running, rough but running. Noticed that the red light on the bottom of the oil cluster Gage is on even when the ignition key id off. Car has not run since.. Tries but will not catch. Thinking the light is a clue....

Ideas?

My thanks,
Wes

Wes, if you do a search for "alternator" you will find many threads with helpful information (like the following) -

Alt Light on w/ Key off

I'm thinking the regulator is bad. Question is: will the motor still run with this light on? New regulator will be in Thursday.

thanks for the help...
Going to get this 68 running yet.....
Running MSD, pertronics and flamethrower coil.

Wes, what we're trying to tell you is that you have a blown alternator diode.

Current from your battery is flowing into the diode plate, and rather than being blocked by the diode, it's flowing right through one of them, into the Stator, then out to the Trio diodes, through the blue wire back to the warning lamp, and then to ground. This is highly abnormal.

What work have you done to the alternator lately? Don't change the regulator, that's probably not the problem.

Also, if you have a pertronix ignitor with the flamethrower coil, you can ditch one or the other-- you can use the pertronix to trigger the MSD, and use and MSD high vibration blaster II coil, or use the pertronix with the flamethrower and ditch the MSD. The primary resistance of the flamethrower coil is too high for a CDI system.

Interesting. I'll pull the alt and have checked.
Regarding the MSD setup. I called Pertronics and they said I had to use the flamethrower coil with the Ignitor and the MSD unit. (Over 3oh). I had a blaster II coil installed but could not get motor to run. They said the blaster II coil did not have enough Ohms. I'll do a search for MSD and Pertronics to see what I have done wrong this time.... Having fun though...
