How were looms wrapped in the mid 80's
Can anyone tell me how the factory wrapped electrical wiring in the mid 80's. I have an 84 Carrera which I want to do some clean up on and see parts of the loom appeared to be wrapped in pvc style electrical tape as opposed to the matt style which IMHO looks more original and factory spec. The PVC looks too new and is fairly clean making me think it was added by the PO.
Anyone know what was done back in the day? |

I think a lot of them were wrapped with "loom" electrical tape, which isn't sticky and comes apart even after years of service. Ever try to unwrap normal electrical tape after it's been in place?
I've been looking for a place to buy this tape, anybody know a source? Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 346k miles |

I think 3M makes a cloth electrical tape. It comes in black and white.

I think what your looking for is the cloth style tape. Its called friction tape you can get it at many hardware stores.

Look on ebay there is a guy selling one inch vinyl automotive wiring tape . I bought some and it is self adherent without adhesive.

That works.
I have spent many hours with the electrical tape abatement process. That is Bobo the chimp's trademark. The "hot rodder" braided stuff looks cool but does not do anything except abrasion resistance. Heat shrink tubing is very inexpensive and easy to use, but of course a re-wrap is not possible is most cases. I think these guys have some discussion on the "retro" tape. Non-Adhesive Harness Tape

I found that 3M black hockey stick tape to be almost a perfect match to the original wrap for my 86.
