Worn key/lockset?

Lately I have been having issues with the one key I got with the car and using it to lock/start the car. Sometimes, it's smooth as butter. Other times, it won't turn at all - turn it over, works fine. Won't work in the passenger door, then works on the driver's door. Next day, doesn't work in the driver's door, but works in the passenger door.

It seems to me like it's a copied key, worn lockset/tumbler mismatch. Key is not worn in the same pattern as the lockset.

I ask because I have just the one key. I want to make copies, but making copies of a crappy key means I have crappy copies. So, buy a new lockset for the whole car? Have a locksmith shave the key(s) to match the wear pattern on the existing locks?

I am nervous only having the one key.

I just had new keys made. Remove your door handle and take it to a reputable locksmith; they should be able to make some new keys. I am not sure that this will solve your problem, but may be worth a shot as it is easier and cheaper than a new lockset and less problematic than having a set of keys cut from a worn original.

It would seem that your issue is with the key itself, since it works in the various locations intermittently. Is the key bent? I had some issues with a bent key like yours, but I just sort of bent it back as straight as I could.

You could have a new Master key cut using your VIN number and proof the car is yours (or easier if you still have the factory key card code). This could be done at a reputable locksmith. My locksmith told me it would cost $40 to cut a new Master key this way. Some Porsche dealers could do this as well, but I think they said it would cost $140. Still a lot cheaper than a new set of locks, but not sure if your problem will be solved or not.

For my 81SC, the Master key (black) is the same profile as the Valet key (red). The Valet key has different grooving along the length of the key.

You can order a new key by vin number as another stated from the dealer that is already cut. Takes between two to six weeks to get but it is a factory key.
It also sounds like your ignition lock assembly is wearing out too. The door lock tumblers wear out too.
If it were me, I would be trying the new factory key first.
