Targa Body Bracing....

It's been discussed alot. I'll just show some pictures of the solution I decided on. Since I don't fit in anything with a roof with my helmet on - the Targa was my choice to go out and play (autocrosser).

It requires some "minor" welding of tabs to connect the bar (1" dia. and 2 ft. long). The length was based on the size of my feet - still needed to get in. It pivots up and out of the way for egress AND can be used as a flag pole for your parade checkered flag lap.

Wow, so are you planning to snap those in everytime you track then place a load on the rods?

I need to add - for those that are thinking of this... requires removing arm rests and going with flat panel door (make your own). I'm still working on creating a interior door handle - probably wood.

I haven't had much chance to try - will test this Sat. at an autocross. For now, it's nice not having the windshield dancing side to side in front of me while traveling over rougher roads.

Hello Jim,

Since you tuned me in to Speedway... I just decided to 'supersize'. Install is literally 2 min. - used clevis pins.

thanks,

Shh don't tell anyone I knew those looked familiar :P

So, if I may suggest marking the rods so you know where to pre-load every time you use it???

Excellent work, you should definitely enjoy the new solidness of the body, I can only image what your set will do

Heck good excuse to get some RSR type panels (wink wink), less weight to boot.

The bars are thick enough and the rod end/clevis stout enough, I easily hand twist until firmly preloaded, snug the jam nuts and done. I've been trying to find a knurled (read 'oversized') nut that will allow easier loosening for quicker disconnect.

I've got the Targa bars that used to be sold here installed on my SC. IMO a noticeable improvement regardless of the doubters... Anyway, my point is, every time I look at them I wonder if they'd be more effective if the lower mounting was attached at a position closer to the A pillar...

At least now I know what they would've looked like if they did.

But, now your design has me thinking again...

I wonder if the effectiveness of the two different designed bars lower mounting position could be measured? I would think the closer to the mid point between the A and B pillar would be the most effective position as it would be the strongest point of leverage?

Hmmm

I know there's another group making these in CF, I believe they mount in a similar location to the original Targa bars...

Anyone do any testing on the different lower mounting points? I know there was a very detailed thread way back when that showed a guys SC all jacked up on only one side creating a twist in the chassis; they measured the deflection with and without the targa bars... Unfortunately I don't remember what the final verdict was...

Anyway, great job and would love to see more installation and fabrication pics please

Cheers,
Jason

that would be us but they are aluminum and not cf. you can see more of them here:

Nineball, your targa body braces are ready for test fit

anything that stretches further forward from the seat belt mounting points would in theory be better as the targa suffers from a lack of a solid roof. the down side to doing that, as you can see in this thread, is modifying the car to move it and then the added hassle of getting in/out of the car similar to having a full cage inside. the clevis helps with that but you have to have the top off the car to take advantage of it.
