Fixed bearing vs cone+cup

Hey Guys

Is there a contemporary fixed bearing available to replace the old front wheel cone and cup type of bearing on a early 911?

Thanks for any tips.

Spring is in the air up here in Toronto. I can practically smell the Toyo R1Rs burning now.

Cheers

If you use a fixed bearing...how do you set the freeplay?
You could put in CO66 high precision bearings of the double row style I suppose...but the cost will make you sit down real fast...(they can run several hundred dollars).
Another alternative would be to use two bearings with a spacer in between...but the load carrying rating is your main problem.
The tapered style has bigger load capacity than a ball style.
There are double row tapered bearings...and I have seen some of these that are sealed so you would not need to regrease on a regular basis.
I'm out of ideas...good luck.

Thanks Bob

I have to confess it's a bit beyond my expertise. I think I do get the general idea though. It's my mechanic's thought to try this and I'm fishing around for him to see if this has ever been an option for anyone.

Thank you for the info. I'll pass it along.

To what end? The tapered roller bearing is perfectly suited to this application. Perfectly.

+1

The original setup works perfectly and the bearings and seals can be found at any auto parts store if you need them ASAP.

My thoughts too, Jon, if not so vehement. The stock bearings run and run. An occasional cleaning and regreasing (very occasional), replacement of the seal, readjust, and good to go a long time more.

Porsche did change bearing types with the introduction of the 964s. But I don't recall that being touted as an improvement in terms of service life or general suitability. It had more to do with a different strut and axle design.
