Another Resurrection thread - a '75

It's good to be back...

So, long story short. Back in 1998 I bought a 1975 911S. It ran ok, but had some rust. I was the second owner and the car had 100,000 miles on it. I got it running and safe, drove it for a bit, but then got aspirations to fix the rust (my garage partner was a pro bodyman), add SC flares and paint it. We started down that path, got steel cutoff quarter panels from a Carrera, new-to-me steel fenders and patched some of the rust in the door jambs. Then, my buddy took a job far away, before we could finish the work (I have no bodywork experience whatsoever) and the car went into storage with the bodywork half finished (flares temporarily screwed into place, rust repairs not completed, etc.)

In the meantime, my wife and I had two kids, bought a house, new jobs, the works. I also briefly campaigned a Spec Miata with some minor regional success to keep my sports car needs going, and fast forward to now, I am in a position to finally get off my butt and restore this old 911.

I have been reading all of the resurrection threads and backdate threads for the past couple of months. I have decided on a backdate, and I spoke with Damon up at Series900 in NH to take the car at the end of the summer to complete the rust repair and finish the body modifications along with a full long hood backdate and to shoot it with light ivory (from the original GP White.) In the meantime, I have gotten some good advice from a fellow P-car friend who suggests getting the car mechanically squared away before taking it to bodywork - which seems like a smart thing to do.

A couple of questions I would love some advice on. I have read the excellent resurrection threads, and I plan to follow all of this advice, clean the fuel tank, replace lines, MM oil in cylinders, hand crank, etc. etc. However, I want to change the stock 2.7 motor from CIS injection over to PMO carbs. If I am bringing this engine back from its deep sleep, do I do all of the prep work and install the carbs from the get-go, or do I get it running with the CIS first - the car always ran ok, but never perfect, and I have seen how troubleshooting the CIS to get it to run can be a pretty major exercise that I don't really want to embark on if I am just going to remove it. The other question is the fact that way back when, some idiot (oh wait, that would be me) broke a stud holding the engine sump cover during an oil change, the classic overtightening. What would be the best way to fix this? I have never fixed a broken bolt in magnesium (that is magnesium ,isn't it?), so is there any special things I should do?

Really excited to get this process started and ultimately get the 911 I have always dreamed of. Thanks as always for such a great forum.

Matt - I'm currently restoring a 75 s too. I'll be following your thread with much interest. I'm glad to offer any help I can but I'm very new to all this so I'm sure it will be limited. No idea about your broken stud, my engine is out but I haven't started any work on it yet.

Yeah it's moved along a bit since those pics were taken. I ordered the metal last week to build a rotisserie (an octisserie like fish cops) - I hope to have that done in the next week or two. I'll need to start a thread like this at some point but I move so slow I think people would get bored quickly.
