Vin Decoding

Searched and searched the world over......

Any place(s) to do a vin decode on a 1980 911SC ?
It's only 10 digits and the decoders i find don't recognize less than 17.

VIN: 91A0143230

Something i'm curious about is the oil level gauge, all that i see in pictures spell it "OIL" while mine says "OEL" is this normal for a 1980 or is something amis ?

Ther's not much to decode on a 1980 model. The VIN is correct for a 1980 US-spec car. That's pretty much all there is to know for that year.

The oil level gauge for your car should be part number 911.641.202.03. You can see this number inscribed inside the glass at the very top of the gauge. Look up at it from below the gauge to see the number. The US cars originally had a gauge marked with the German spelling for oil. At some point they changed the spelling but I don't recall what year. No big deal, either way.

Regards,
JR

Vin
basic site , don't know if it's accurate
http://www.adelgigs.com/911vin%20numbers.shtml

"OEL" was a misspelling, it was suppose to be "OLE"
but Hanz was up late that night burning the oil

From Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" page 43:
91=911 93=Turbo
A=1980
0=plant manufactured
1=spacer number
4=911SC for the US 3=ROW 7=930
remaining four digits are the serial number.
1980 was the last of the ten digit vin numbers.

your question is not quite the same as the OP ... you are looking for an option code ... M471 under the hood on the option sticker if you have one .. the other way is to contact Porsche and request the authenticity letter .. although they are not very accurate in those years ....some have said ...

Well, since Porsche didn't make that a regular production option until 1984, I'd say that the chances of it not being a converted narrow body 911 would be close to zero.
