freshening up my transaxle Should I reseal it too?

So I am in the process of painting the transaxle on my 78 sc but this is not only for cosmetic reasons but to prevent any further pitting which was severe in some spots. It sits here with a fresh coat of sealer/primer. I am getting ready to change the shift shaft and output flange seals and my question to you guys is should I split it apart and replace the case seals as well?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1363314828.jpg

Did it leak before? if not, I would leave it, personally...

No,no leaks at all. And I was thinking the same as you if it ain't broke?... blah blah
but it is out of the car and I will be flushing it so maybe it could use a new set of gaskets. Oh screw it! I'll take my chances.

Without disassembling a lot of stuff, you can really change the shift shaft seal and the nose gasket. Not really worth it if it is not leaking. Why tempt the car God?

i would be more concerned that the paint could effect cooling.

The only thing I would consider doing if it is not leaking is removing the bottom plate to check the shift fork, the screws can come loose. I use a very light coat of locktite 574 on the gasket.

Output shaft seals are easy enough to change. You'll need the paper case gasket after pulling the aft cover off for the shift shaft seal change. Also be careful not to misplace the small rod that engages the reverse light switch. Might as well do the input shaft seal while you have it out of the car.

Good feedback guys, I appreciate it. I will definitely check the shift fork because it seems simple enough. As far as the cooling being affected by the paint as T77911S mentioned, I wondered about it too. Now I'm no engineer, but I reasoned that with only a 200 hp car and knowing how slowly the gears actually turn in there I think the heat dissipation loss factor will be minimal. Besides I would rather stop the corrosion from getting worse, especially here in humid south Florida.

it was just a thought, you may be fine. personally, i would not paint it.

how/where is the corrosion?
