86 Shifter knob replacment.

Recently purchased a new leather wrapped shifter knob for my 86 but can't seem to find the right approach for removing the existing Porsche plastic one.
Do they just unscrew? Don't realy want to out a pilar on it or on the shifter rod.

you need to remove the plastic cover with the shift pattern, there is a nut underneath.

there are many threads about this you can find with a search. it uses a compression ring and twists off. sometimes you can remove it intact by putting a wrench under it whacking it upwards with a mallet. sometimes it can't be removed without something breaking.

No, that's not correct. That will work for a car with a G50 gearbox, which an '86 doesn't have.

The knob in an '86 is held on by friction. There is a deformable crush sleeve that fits between the inner diameter of the knob and the shaft. It's going to be super tight. Getting it off generally requires that you put something under the knob that will allow you to hammer it off from underneath. That's tough to do on a car that is equipped with a leather boot, as yours is...

Get a wrench that is a tad bigger than the rod diameter, place below the shifter knob, hit upwards with a soft hammer and eventually it will come off...mine came off broken ...Grrrrr
