Orange bar crest

Maybe this a dumb question....but i'm not as familiar with the older cars. Why is the orange bar crest so sought after? I'm guessing rarity. But I still don't understand why people want them so much.

Real ones in good shape are indeed difficult to obtain.

Seymore, orange bar crests were only on certain long hood cars and I dont think they are reproduced like our crests which makes them hard to find

Read "The Sneetches" by the eminent author T.S. Geisel. The mysteries of the orange bar crest, and a great many other peculiarities of Porsche world, will be revealed.

Haha Daves911L, I absolutely love your response. I thought I was going to find a book about Porsches, little did I know I was about to learn a much broader lesson.

Haven't these also started to be reproduced or manufacturing started up again through Porsche? I thought I saw a video the other day here that showed them being made.

I wonder how long you have to leave it outside in the weather so that it has the patina of Shaun's above...

Pics...?

My wife bought me one of the reissued badges from Porsche for Christmas. They are the early style with the smooth back, not the later Orange Bar with the slightly pebbled back. It looks great. Very reasonably priced at about $170.

Seymore,

I was 100% serious. Read it. Then consider how many Sylvester McMonkeys you can spot here and elsewhere (using words like rare, original, sympathetic, significant, and patina) My '68 still wears a tarnished, drab, wax-residue encrusted, orange bar crest simply because I was too much of a cheap SOB to shell out $20 bucks for a new shiny one years ago. Imagine my surprise to learn I now have a star on my belly.

Sully and I would differ on what constitutes a "reasonable" price for a small metal/enamel emblem. Can you see the smooth back when it is installed? Sylvester would be proud!

Here is a basic primer on the different hood crests used on the air cooled cars:
