Engine lid cable question

I have an 87 930 but I'm guessing that the cable to release the back hood are similar for a lot of years.
Has anybody ever changed one? Are they a pain? Any tips if you had to do it again?
I have to pull quite hard to release my latch and I'm afraid its going that the cable will break sooner than later.
I'm considering some preventive maintenance.

My cable was very hard to pull when I got the car as well. I disconnected it from the latch and pulled it out with a bit of force. I cleaned off the rust that was on it with steel wool and WD40. Filled the tube with Honey Goo and jammed it back in. Works like new
