Heater Hose colour

What colour should the heater hose be on a 1971 T.

The hose comes out from the rear of the heat exchanger, and has been damaged by being quite exposed.

I'm entering a concours event, so need to know what colour it was was the factory.... it's currently black, but I've been told it should be red.

Please help. Phil

Phil,

If you are going the concours route, Dr. Brett Johnson wrote an excellent book years ago that you should get. Go here for a copy:

He covers about every aspect of the car and is the "Bible" for concours people that I know. BTW, my 72 had black hoses but it was a German model.

Black paper-covered aluminum foil spiral hose is the only hose I am aware of from the factory. Other colors would be aftermarket hose, AFIK!

Heater hose? You mean the hoses that plug into the heater control boxes? If so, mine are an orangish/red...

Phil,

Paul brings up a very good point. If you are talking about the hoses that are in the motor compartment that duct cold air to the inlet of your heat exchangers, then they were black covered foil/paper.

If you are talking about the hoses from the warm end of the heat exchangers to the on/off valve on the body of your car, then these were a red silicone type of hose. (at least on my car) After re-reading your post, my guess is that you are talking about the second set of hoses, that duct the warm air to the car. Many times these are replaced by the foil/paper type of hose, which is incorrect.

They are exposed to heat and water and such and will not last long, thus the upgraded silicone hose. I looked at the hose offered by Pelican and they show the correct hose but in black. The red/orange style hose may not be available any longer. (if you have to have the correct color, aviation suppliers still sell it www.aircraftspruce.com)

Take a look here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911E/por_911E_exhaus_main.htm

Same as pwd72
Mine were reddish paper (?) over a wire spiral. I bought some from a Porsche dealer many years ago as replacements but never used them- I may still have them. They are the same as the ones that were on the car and are packaged in an OEM bag with OEM stickers. The OEM variety is probably still available from a dealer.

Black

Sorry, I didn't explain this very well did I.

I went and had a proper look last night, and it's the hose that leaves the rear of the heat exchanger, enters the engine compartment and connects either side of the fan.

These should be black.

Sorry.
