Car is not starting

My 1980 911 targa is not starting, when I touch the yellow wire to the red wire, the car will start. Those wires are located in the engine compartment to the left side. Is this a bad voltage regulator or alternator problem?
Thank you

Can you take a photo of the wires you are touching together in the left side engine compartment? Also can you provide more of a description of the symptom i.e. turn ignition key to start, starter engages, engine cranks, engines does not fire on any cylinder until I jumper the red and yellow wire located on device/connector/bare wires???

As stated above:
Please post a good picture of the wires you are connecting together.
Showing exactly where they are located in the engine bay.

If they are the ones to the thermo time switch on the left camshaft cover you are forcing the cold start injector to operate.

More details are needed.

i think porsche did some really stupid and whacked out stuff with the wiring. this is one i dont understand why.
the yellow start wire is tied into the heater relay crap in the engine bay. you have basically isolated your problem to either the connector in the rear, the ignition switch or the wiring from the switch to the relay panel in the back.
its kind of a nice trick to start it from the engine bay like that though. awalful brave to go touching wires together though.

Yellow starter wire runs from ignition switch through main body harness directly to pin 1 of the 14 pin connector in a 1980. The yellow wire at the TTS comes from the CSI plug where it is tied in to the small yellow wire from the starter solenoid. The red/black wire runs directly from the TTS to the CSV connector.
No heater circuitry involved.

Those would normally be the only 2 loose red and yellow wires at the back of the engine bay.

thank you all. a picture is not showing where wires come from or go to, timmy2 is correct the yellow wire is coming from the starter,#1 position in the 14 pin block how ever I'm touching the solid red wire located @ position #14 & #1. Question is this red wire coming directly from the battery, and I'm simply bypassing the alternator, cold starter, and voltage regulator. With the ignition off, the starter will turn over the engine, but will not run. With the ignition on the engine will fire up and run.
