2 suspension questions:

1) How important is corner balancing for street driving, sometimes aggressive?

2) Are the springplates on a ’74 911 adjustable?

Thanks in advance.

I think a properly corner-weighted car is a lot more fun to drive.
Of course, it depends on your own awareness of what's happening when you drive. If you're tuned to what the car is doing, i.e. the balance of the car, turn-in, oversteer and understeer, then you would find a well set-up car much more fun to drive. Even if you don't feel that your driving and car set-up skills are that finely honed, get your car corner weighted and your driving skill will improve just from the fact that your car is operating at a higher level.

Porsche first started using adjustable spring plates on the 911 SC in 1978. They will retrofit to your car with no problem.
The range of adjustment, however, is fairly small and special wrenches are required to properly adjust them. They are good for fine-tuning. Larger adjustments will still require removal of the spring plate to adjust the splines on the torsion bars.

Actually '76 was the first year for the adjustables.

I think the answer to your question is it depends on how far out of balance your car is. If it's way out it will impact your street driving, if it's reasonable then it won't make much difference.

Uneven handling and premature brake lockup are indicators that your car is out of balance but you won't really know until it goes on the scales.

I believe anytime you pull out a tbar or change ride height you really need to get it balanced. Otherwise you may be way off and not even know it.

oops, Chuck's right about the 76, I've always used SC plates but the late 2.7's are the same. temporary brain fade.
I do think that any driver will benefit from a well-balanced car. Probably some more than others. If your car is older and has been modified by a previous owner I'd plan on a corner balance as it might well be off.

My 3/76 did not come with adjustables. I got some sc ones and my mad scientist friend modified then to adjust like the sway-aways. So far so good!
