Post more CDI questions

I read somewhere that with the key on, you can hear the cdi box whine...does that mean it's okay after all? Would it fail if it heats up? Could it be something like sparkplug wires instead? I looked at the wires when the car was running then had my girlfriend gas it so it would stumble and die but didn't see anything amiss. Not that that means anything of course.

Jeff,

All the whine/whistle signifies is that the DC-to-DC converter that generates 460 Volts to charge the capacitor ... is working, the oscillator is running. It doesn't mean or guarantee that the trigger circuitry, or SCR are working ... or that it is even getting the proper trigger signal from the magnetic pickup coil via the green cable!
