I've been asking questions all day and still a few more to go but heres more info

John - unlikely to get the 3.0 or 915 box - just too old - none around apparently. I did meet a government transport official today and he's going to check and see if there's any licenced older 911 still around. Maybe I can get in contact with them and see if they have parts. I'll let you know. The jury is still out on 3.2 engines and parts. Apparently someone here is flogging them back to Aust. as soon as they come up for sale. Gotta find out more about this. Am seeing a company called CarreraSuper Cars (mechanical and sales) tomorrow they should give me more details.

Adam - hehe...I'm hanging off on the '89 at the moment. Want to see how desparate he becomes. He's rung again tonight already:eek: I told him I was (and I am) just fishing around at the moment. I'm waiting on my brother to get back to me about an import broker in Adelaide that he knows. I need to fully understand all the requirements. I was up till 2am this morning reading on the net all the relevant govt. documents and am still fuzzy on what the costs will be to me and whether I'll actually make or lose money on this.

Maybe I'll get in on the 964 sales as these seem to be relatively cheap and more widely available than Carreras and earlier.

I've just had a thought...I might end up being one of the few people owning a pre 90's Carrera in HK - that might put my value up! NOT...one thing I know, HK'ers don't like old stuff even if its beautiful eg old 911's.

Would anyone happen to know a web site where you can search ads or classifieds for cars which are for sale in Hong Kong. Sort of like what www.tradingpost.com.au is for Aus. It's all very interesting the more you learn about importing, I mean most people know it is done but don't understand exactly how. Ahh...unless you can read Chinese (Cantonese) then this might be a little hard.

Here's some dealers in English but the charge an arm and a leg I reckon but I've used them all the same. They are both experienced in overseas deals I believe.

I can't believe how cheap 911's are in HK.

I bought my 1975 911 for $25,000 Australian dollars.

I was told by the previous owner that the car was imported from Hong Kong. I wonder how much profit they made !!!!

It is in excellent condition though, the interior is original and it looks brand new, no crack's minimal wear and the car is almost rust free. pretty good for a non galvanised 911.

Im excited now . I want to sell and import.

What costs are associated ie shipping costs, import duties etc.

If I paid AU$20,000 for a 911 in Hong Kong what would be the total cost of the car registered on the road in Sydney?

Does anyone know of importers ? web sites ?

I looked into this many, many years ago and from my 'old' research, any car over 15 (or is it 16) years old incurs a 50% import tax.

Any car 'younger' than that incurs a 90% import tax!!!

So, if you find a 1992/93 964 for say 239000 HK, that roughly equals $55k AUD. Since it is not over 15 y.o, it incurs a 90% tax on that, which brings it up to approx $104k, then you add all your shipping/insurance costs and they charge you 10% GST on top of that total :eek:

Don't forget you still have to have it ADR complianced and RHD converted (if required) if under 15 y.o.

Cars in HK are right hand drive. Cars in China are left hand drive. Japanese is right hand drive. Malaysia is right hand too I think.

This is the pricing according to the Aus. Gov web site

On a vehicle less than 30 years -

1987 911 Carrera purchased in HK

purchase price AUS$25,000
Customs 15% $ 3,750
Transport & Ins $ 1,500
GST 10% $ 3,025

Total $33,275

So can you get a car like this is Aust. for that price? This would be a low miles vehicle that has passed roadworthiness testing every year for the past 5 years (after 10 years all cars must be inspected annually). Inspection includes emisions controls, road test, and usual mechanical checks.

1. The price for purchase is high in this senario. You could defintiely get one cheaper than this privately.
2. 1987 is the (2002) magic 15 years which wavers the need to get any Compliance Plates and no restrictions on ownership or type of use.
3. You could obviously go for a 964 at about the same price but the 15 year won't kick in yet so you'd have to arrange compliance. That in itself should not be an issue to any extent as I think HK has similar regulations as Aust.. I hope to find out more about this soon.

There are two other documents that cost AUS$50 each but other than that, I think that's it. Well obviously you've got registration in your own state to think of!

If you look at the links I posted from dealers, I think you'll see they want around HK$150,000. This is very high and they can be brought down considerably.

Well, that's about what I've found out for now. I'm sure there's still more info to come and I'll post as soon as I hear from my bro.

By the way, if you paid over HK$200,000 for a 92/93 964 you'd be wanting a perfect 911.

My friend bought his 92 C4 which is in immaculate condition and drives beautifully, with a worked engine (but never raced) and suspension installed by the Porsche dealer (Jebsen HK), One owner, full Porsche Dealership service history, garaged always, race seats, and all the original parts in zip lock bags or sealed boxes (the guy was a real perfectionist), replaced dual mass f/w, no leaks, low kms, for HK$180,000 1 year ago from the dealer. (We bought our cars at the same time from the same dealer). Actually the dealer is the one listed above - expatmotors.

The dealer was asking HK$200,000.

With the amount of 996's, 993's and new BM's he'd be lucky to unload it for the same amount. He asked around and the low price was HK$110,000 the high HK$162,000. Suffice to say he's not selling which is a pity because he uses it like a grandma. It deserves me! Yes I told him I'm interested but no more than $160,000. He won't sell it anyway - he loves it too much.

You are correct in this . I checked with some frieght brokers. They told me the shipping fee is $5000 AU.

the total would be $38,000.

This is still cheap but for alot of effort.

Yeah, my price on shipping was to fill a container that already had other stuff in it, and was thru my Taekwondo coach who owns a shipping business here.

I think the $4000 price is correct for shipping the car with no share arrangements which might be safer - just depends upon who you know - life:rolleyes:

New Zealand imports many many many second-hand cars from Japan (more cars imported each year second hand than total new car sales....). Quite seriously, NZ probably has the second-best selection of Japanese performance cars in the world (after Japan). Everyone has a WRX, EVO, RX7, Skyline, blah blah blah.

Why? Because it is cheap and not impeded by the govt. Shipping is about NZ$1000 (A$850 or less than US$500). Customs = goods and services tax only = 12.5% (on car and shipping). No duties. Clearance, compliance etc is under NZ$1000. I can't see the shipping being so much more from HK???

As I set out above, the car must meet the "new" frontal standard (ie post-86 for a 911), or be 25yo or more.

Jeeez, I look at a HK$160k C2 and I wonder - that is NZ$42k, plus blah blah blah = $50k for a $60k car... I changed my mind - not enough in it to take the risk on a car being a POS.

Oh, and Singapore is RHD too.
