Aussie Pelican's please help
Hey guys,
I want to sell my 87 Cab to Australia. Can you give me the going rate for a stock 3.2ltr white 1987 Cab in fair to good condition. What are the prices in the papers and at dealers More details? - R.O.W. car meaning 230hp (?), originally from UK in Hong Kong for 5 years. No major repairs although its obvious upon close inspection that some rust in the right front fender has been cut out and a door ding has been removed removed, requiring some repainting. Stock black Fuch wheels in fair condition with excellent rubber. Roof is in average condition as is its boot cover. Both really could do with replacement but I don't put the roof up much here so I haven't bothered. Air cond. works as well as any 87! Engine seems really strong, no puffs of smoke and pulls strongly thru whole range, has 54,000miles on it. Comes with Alpine AM/FM/CD head unit. Suspension all good and all electricals work. Complete tool kit and carpeted luggage area. Original log/service books detailing servicing for first 10,000miles. Kept receipts for last 2 years from major service centre here in HK. A genuine solid car but not a concours. Wanting to upgrade to C2/4 964 maybe Turbo, as prices are falling dramatically here, and taxes on an 87 into Australia is very low now. Overall I'd call it a good car in the range Poor, Average, Good, Excellent, Concours, One of a kind! Thanks Mark ![]() Last edited by expat; 07-13-2002 at 08:32 PM.. |

Aus delivered commands better prices.
It'd also depend in which state - NSW - highest? Vic - mid SA - low In Vic, we see a fair sprinkling of collectables come across from SA to be sold for a better price here. In Melb, the Healey Factory: http://www.healeyfactory.com.au/ is keen to resell good quality Porsches. I bought mine from them. Russell Cox is the man to speak to. He owns a Turbo and has a passion for the marque. They had a Red 87 Targa there recently in top condition for around $57, so it'd go for $52, and be a terrific buy for the new owner. A 964 eh? Could you stretch it to a 993? ![]()

Agree with Seano. try and save a bit more and go for a 1994+ 993. The 964's are depreciating badly. Seen some below the market value of an '89 3.2 Carrera
![]() Unless of course you intend to go with a C2T or Turbo 3.6 ![]() |

Thanks for your feedback guys.
Looks like I can make some money on this, even if I get the lower price. I bought the car for AUS$28,000. No-one here wants old cars ![]() The 993 is holding a price around AUS$80,000 for a turbo which I don't have the cash for as I have two other cars already. There's lots of 964T's for sale around the $25-40,000 mark so this is where I'm looking. There's a really straight 964 89 Coupe down the road from me for sale and he wants AUS$16,000 so you can see how low prices can go. Thanks for the info. Now I need to find out what the taxes will be and how to actually transport and sell it. Then I see how close I can come to making any money??? Thanks again for you replies. Cheers Mark |

Mark, do they wreck Porsches over there? I think you'd make some good money sending the odd crate of spares over. I'm going to be chasing a 3 litre + 915 box in the next 18 months for my car. The going price for this stuff back here is around the $12k mark, but I heard a whisper that if I can find a supplier either in HK or Japan, I can expect to pay half this price.
Wanna make some money? ![]()

Hey Adam,
Better still, I'll go and talk to him and get as much of the detail and let you know. My mecahnic friend told me he was selling it and for how much. To me it looks very straight although it lives outside a fair bit. I'll see if he's got a picture of it and if so, I'll post this too. Wife reckons I should buy and sell to Aust. along with my 87. Of course she's happy to get another P-car - she loves them too but mostly likes the fact that I'm kept busy at night instead of going to bed early and wanting more..............anyway that's another subject ![]() Cheers Mark |

If you know of the mileage and the general condition, that's all I'm really after. I'm not quite able to purchase another 911, but it may tempt me into upgrading one of them...

Hi Mark,
You have to adjust your expectations when it comes to imports to Australia. 18months ago, there was a pristine (and I do mean PRISTINE) '88 3.2 Coupe with about 65K's on the clock. Guards red. Personal import from the UK. It sat in a well known and respected Porsche dealership for an unusually long period and then it sold. For AU$43,000. Had it not been for the import factor it would easily have fetched about $70+ at the time. There is a place in Melbourne called "The 911 Factory" who specialise in importing (mainly from the US) but they may be able to give you more feeling for the import market.

Yeah, I hear what your saying Victor. I will give the guys you suggested a call.
Notwithstanding that, I guess people are suspicious of imports in Aus. because there's some mystery about its history eh. Personally when you see how restrictive driving is in Japan and Hong Kong and the fact that we have to get yearly roadworthiness including emissions checks, people should see these cars as good deals generally. I'm thinking that as an Aussie citizen I will import it into Aust. and put it on the private market and see what happens. My brother owns a Midas franchise so deals with cars all day and my Dad's retired (well actually so is my brother) so between them they've probably got the time to field questions and show the car. I've a few friends in Syd. who I might check-up with and see if they want to make a few thousand from taking the car and sell on my behalf. To be honest I'm really not after a money maker here. Its just that I want to upgrade and the market here for older Porsche is almost non-existant - don't want to lose money right! Thanks again for your advice and suggestions. Cheers Mark |

Adam,
Cooooeee cobber...(thought I just throw that in for the non-Aussies reading this post who think we talk that way all the time) Went to speak to the guy who owns the car up the road. He's in China at the moment but back tommorrow so I'll have a chat to him out of interest. His wife said he was looking at Aus$20,000 range and had rung someone in Sydney to find out about selling there. I think my mechanic was right then when he said he was going for less than the 20g's ie 16+. Taking a peak at it, its a 1989 964. 48,000km and the exterior and interior look in good to excellent condition. White exterior and black interior, with a tea-tray spoiler. The engine has always sounded very quiet to me so that should be good. Spotted a bottle of either injector cleaner or maybe oil in the passenger door armrest which might be interesting to question. Rims have curb rash but not dented. So there's some info for ya! I think the only catch is the car has to be 15 years old to get significantly reduced taxes which means another year for this car (depending upon actual build month). I think maybe this is the reason he's not sold it yet as he might be hanging off and understanding the market and how to do this until the magic 15 yr is up. Cheers Mark |

Mark,
It's true about importing 15 yo cars. There are almost no restrictions on them. To register, all you need are proof of purchase (reciept), Road worthiness Certificate, and the import licence. Too easy! Well, if 964s are reaching that sort of price range and the earliest of them are starting to get within the 15 year limitations, then I might start planning. Who cares if you buy one cheap as hell, keep it for a few years, thrash the hell out of it and sell it cheap?? I mean, the relative value of an '89 964 here in Melb is probably $65-75k, so saving around $50k sounds good. What would it cost to get shipped over? Allow up to $4k, even though I'm sure there are ways of getting it done cheaper. So if you bought it for $17k, it now owes you $21k. Get it registered, pay the stamp duty etc and now you're upto around $22,500. Slap some cup wheels on it, lower it, make it noisy and enjoy! Drive it for a few years and fire sell it for $30k-35k and you're laughing. The next person to buy it is still getting a relative bargain. Thanks, Mark. You've really got me thinking!

Don't forget New Zealand! As long as the car meets the recently introduced standard for crash protection (check [here, the total cost of importation is about NZ$500-1000 customs clearance etc plus 12.5% of the freight cost inclusive value (for GST). There are no duties to pay (a proper free market economy...).
And you could try selling it privately through the Porsche club here: www.porsche.org.nz for fairly minimal outlay. I dunno what the car is worth - probably the same in NZ$ as A$ above, maybe slightly less? No duty to pay is good though. I can put you in touch with an importer if you like...

The guy rung me today. He confirmed he's looking for HK$95,000 (AUS$21,000 approx). So I reckon I could knock that down another HK$5-10,000 making it around $18-20,000.
My basis for getting the price down is that its a 1989 3.2 Carrera with 964 front, rear and side panels. It does have however new suspension including turbo tie rods, new exhaust B&B. Has G50 trans. and refurbished interior (carpets), low miles and good service records. My mechanic reckons hang off and its still a AUS$16,000 car in a few months because he's unlikely to sell it here. The guy tolds me he's getting desparate because he's got a Turbo 1994 964 3.6 lined up to purchase and he's nervous about missing it. He told me its up for sale at HK$320,000 (AUS$71,000) which again my mechanic reckons is too much. Problem is that its another 18months before his current car could be exported. Hmmmmmmmm...... ![]() John - got your message. Will see my mechanic friend tonight and ask about such stuff. Cheers Mark |

That is amazing! Since you're buying this '89 coupe, for only AUD$18k, I'd consider giving you $15k for your Cab! ![]() How much do mid-80s 930s sell for over there?
