Burled Wood Dash Replace or Repair Options?
My 1987 930 Cab has this Burled Wood dash. It did not show up on my certificate of authenticity, any clue how to find out if it came with the car either factory or dealer installed? I hear some certificates from Porsche are wrong and they miss options from time to time, assuming this was an option.
The next question is, what are my options to either replace, repair or refinish this to bring its original luster back. I'm guessing that since its a convertible I may have more fading then most. There are some wear spots, small cracks in the clear coat it looks like and a small area where the glue has not held up. Here are some pictures |

someone just sold a complete kit yesterday for $750. retail is $2500 ish. Dealer installed option or diy won't show up on a COA. Check with auto detailers on refinishing wood. Is it held on with double side tape or glue? big day project to remove it i would think, looks good btw

Remove it and have a competent refinisher that knows what to do with dash parts make them look new again
OR- sell the wood kit to someone who really wants it and use the money to do some work to the car after putting some basket weave on the dash or, satin black, or wrinkle/camera case finish. I was a wood worker for many years and made a few burl-wood dashes for English sports cars and happen to love the look of wood when done right but I have never been a fan of wood dashes in any Porsche, just never seem right. Mercedes yes, Ferrari yes, etc. Not even in new Porsches. .2 cents |

I think those were made by Madera Concepts.
They are still around, you can google them and contact them. I'm sure they can help fix whatever you need. |

The seller here mentioned the subtrate was aluminum
Porsche 911 / 930 New Factory Burled Wood Dash, still in box, never used! Fits 86 -89 Looking at your pics above the glove door panel doesn't appear to have any type of metal substrate. The other image showing the wear near the radio panel indicates its a thin veneer. So I'm guessing its not solid stock.

Yup it looks like a tape backing. Around the heater controls where it has come unglued it is thin. Not sure how it was made and feels like plastic. You can also see how rich the color was where it wraps under where the ashtray is. Some looks solid and some veneer. Will check out the recommendations.

Madera Concepts - Restoration
Contacted Madeira and sent them pictures. Got a quick response. I've asked a couple more questions to see if there are any maker marks on these dashes. Not sure if the dash was factory or a dealer installed option. May try again to track down the original owner based on phone numbers in the old repair records. Any way, here is a copy of the response. Wow...... the dash on your 1987 porsche looks like one of our dash trim sets that we fabricated back in those years. .............yes we can refinish the four dash trim panels and the gauge panel the cost is $ 590.00 plus shipping... but you would have to have the panels removed and shipped to us , the turn around time upon rec. the trim set is about 8 to 10 working days, and payment with visa or master card , so if you decide to ship your trim set please include your name and ph.# inside the box and we will call you when we rec. if you have any other questions please feel free to call or email us .... Thank you... |
