Molded dash covers, what do you think?

Is anyone on the board using a coverlay or JC whitney or any other well made plastic/vinyl dash cover as a temp or permanent solution? I would love to know your opinions and see some pics of such applications in use.

I have one on my 1971 911. I thought it would be temporary -- since I did not have $1,500 handy to put a new dash on and I hated the crack staring at me. That was 12 years ago. It looks fine, but I know it's fake so it bothers me a little bit, but somehow the money to go the "right way" gets gobbled up. The suspension needs rebuilding and the body needs work too, but I remind myself that there are lots of ways life is less than ideal but still worthwhile.

I did one on my backdated '87 a couple years ago. I got it from dashcap.com and then covered it with Alcantara. Fit was perfect.

I have one on mine until I find the time to swap the dash out with one I bought, repaired and recovered.
Looks ok and non Porsche people don't notice.

Do a search, a few people have done this including myself and unless you are really looking, you cannot tell. But what works best is if you bring the cover down and have a shop attach leather or vinyl. Now this is not the same as having your dash redone of course, but it's an inexpensive alternative that Porsche enthusiasts cringe at, but my car drives those people nuts the bastard that it is.

Scott- Wow! 12 years and it's still going strong... looks awesome. Btw, the tots are adorable.

RKT- that Alcantara is off the scale. And beautifully done. I am looking around the vent and I just cant tell. Nardi SW and metallic trim plates complement it very nicely. Good eye man!

I think I'm sold on the solution. At least for a couple 12 years or so... Are these both Coverlay brand?

We used the classic 9 dash on my daughters 944 a couple years ago and it looks great. we got it done in a weekend with the hardest part being the removal of the dash.

LMAO! Sorry Bob, I couldn't help imagining you out of frame drinking iced tea and texting about how hard it was to remove the dash...

How do the dashcaps fit? Do you just lay them on... or some sort of clips/glue. What if the dash is not cracked but warped from sun will they still fit?

I have a new dash but don't want to remove the windshield. Maybe I could cut the warped part out and put the cap on.

Did they sew it or did you have it done locally? Does it stand up well enough on its own to just put it over a dash without using a cover?

It really is one of the nicest dashes I have seen. Admire it everytime I see it

Not sure how it would fit over a warped dash unless the the warped part was "unwarped".
The cap just lays on top of the existing dash but it is a very snug fit and almost clicks when you push it down.
The dash cap with the Alcantara literally fit like a tight glove. It came with a tube of adhesive, but because of the fit I did not use it.

Thanks.
I bought the two yards of material from B&J and had a local upholstery shop cover the dash cap. I had them do the double french stitch around the eyebrow and it came out just right. I had enough Alcantara left over to do the knee pad and other pieces myself. Really easy to work with and very durable.

FWIW, I have previously purchased a Coverlay dash cap for a different vehicle (not Porsche). It came with a guarantee to "never" crack or warp. Within 5 years, it cracked and warped.
