3rd brake light hookup?
Trying to get all my problems finished on a 87 911 and installing in a 3rd light from daniel stern and maybe I missed it but the directions did not identify where the best place to hook it up. Can someone that has done this help me out?

I have the Hella 5237 from Dan Stern too. Love it. I mounted mine at the top of my rear window glass and ran the wires under the headliner (with a coathanger) and down into the engine compartment via the rubber grommet where the rear defrost wires go thru the rear firewall (driver's side back corner of the rear shelf). I tied the +12v to the left rear taillight harness with an alligator crimp and tied the ground to the factory ground screw that is near the fuel filter (crimped on an eyelet).
The color of the wire in the taillight harness is different for different models, so check yours before cutting it in. Here's a thread: How to: 3rd brake light install

I didn't know if there was something on the rear board or if it was best to jump it in. Seems like there would be something put in by the factory to connect up cars that came with it

Might be on an 87. On my 82 there was no factory 3rd brake light so there is no factory connector or wire. Now on your 87 there likely is as I believe 3rd brake lights started in 85 or 86 in the USA. If your car is a ROW it may be a toss up, not sure. Check the wiring diagrams for 87.

Third brake light.
The third brake light was moved from the top of the rear window,
to the bottom of the rear window for the 87 through the 89 3.2 cars. Gerry

You can also run a wire forward under the carpet to connect to the switch on the brake pedal, at least I could on my 74.

Thanks for the help!
I did put it on the top Gerry, wanted it to be seen. I will just have to look around it in the rear view. |
