Is the Wurth Matte or Gloss black correct to refinish Carrera Fuchs?
Want to refinish the Fuchs on my Carrera and wondering what supplies you all would order from our gracious host vs buy at home depot. I should say I'm looking for an excuse to order some stuff as I need some tiny bits and pieces that don't make sense to buy alone.
Matte? Gloss? From what I've read here and seen, the finish seems like its more of a satin. Are either of these correct? |

I did some other bits & pieces with the rustoleum and it looked great, but for wheels I would probably cough up the extra dough for the Wurth. But people here have used both with great success. Just stay with the satin finish IMO. Glossy is too, well, glossy :-)

Well I called Pelican and they confirmed that neither Wurth product has the 'correct' gloss level, which I think is important to get right. I don't need perfection in the application, this is a driver, I just want a deeper black than I presently have on my chalky wheels. I'm inclined to give the Rustoleom or something like this a shot: Satin Black Wheel Paint 12 oz Aerosol

First time I repainted my centers, I used a can of Krylon satin black, as I already had a can on the shelf. Looked correct and nice. I'm refinishing them again (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/716779-fuchs-faux-anodizing-what-silver-paint.html) and am using the Rustoleum #7777 satin black. Also looks correct to my eye. So I'm guessing that most any decent quality satin black should be OK for a driver.

There seem to be a lot of votes for the Rustoleum option. Wurth makes (or made?) three different levels of gloss in black - matte, satin and gloss. I'd always thought the satin was the correct one for this. Griot's used to offer a nice German satin black, too. But I no longer see it on his website.

matte is not flat. it has a slight sheen.

Got started stripping my wheels. Used a gel stripper and variety pack of wire brushes along with some scotch bright. Took a number of passes for sure but got two done in about 2 hours. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366940233.jpg

Are you trying to retain the original anodizing? I thought mechanical removal of paint with wire brushes would remove the anodized coating?

I am trying to keep the anodizing on the rim and repaint what was previously painted. I'm not using power tools and trying to be careful around the rim.
If the paint was previously applied on anodized metal... well it won't be anymore. |
My 87 GP white coupe but with factory option white wheels.....My first reaction was to paint them black when I first got the car, white is absurd on wheels, or just stupid, but after some time I came to like them even though they are a PITA.

Will 1 can of Wurth matte black cover all 4 wheels, or do I need 2 to be sure I have enough paint?

I used Rustoleum "High Heat Ultra" as recommended by others on here and got great results. Not glossy and not flat.

I think for ease of use, Wurth's is easier to spray to a perfect finish.

At Hershey, I purchased a can of Wurth Semi Gloss Black to paint my 380mm stock Porsche steering wheel. I removed the standard horn button to replace it with a 60's hockey puck style, but the spokes were scratched too much. I'll post a finished photo later.

There's no accounting for taste, they say, but for what it's worth, I really like the job Wheel Enhancement did on mine. Highly polished aluminum rim with satin black spokes and hand painted traditional Porsche crest centers. The color of the car is black and the satin really sets off nicely from the gloss body finish.

Reviews for Wheel Enhancements are a mixed bag. Some people give great reviews, some -- not so much. Seems like I've heard a lot more good than bad over the past year or so.

Wurth Matte Black
Buy two, you will problably need them, and if you don't you will need to have some for touch up. Best product on the market. Good finnish, best spray quality and closest to the original.

Anyway, my question is, do I clear-coat over the paint? I bought the clear coat and was planning to shoot them tonight. Auto trim paint might be the look you are looking for. Dupli-color or SEM brand should suffice. Although on the can it says flat black,there is a very small amount of satin look to it. Pep boys should have the Dupli-color and Summit racing should have the SEM. Both will stand up to the elements.

Making progress...
Stripped the paint with several rounds of gel stripper and a mix of scotchbrite & hand held wire brushes. Masked off the anodized lip with 3M Super 33 electrical tape (awesome stuff). Prepared surface with Eastwood PRE. 3 light coats of Rustoleoum self etch primer (sorta like they way they look olive drab) then 3 light coats of Rustoleoum 777 (not dry yet - better pics tonight!). Gotta say, I've been buying all sorts of high priced spray cans from Eastwoods that don't always spray that great or stay that clean. When you guys are using the Wurth's semi gloss black. Is this the flexible semi glosee trim paint? Thanks

Can anyone give simple explanation of how to sand out dust and imperfections? My first wheel came out pretty well. I decided to try and cover the second one while drying and like a fool managed to dump dust all over it. I've read a few accounts of how to do this for a proper paint job but how about for a rattle can lacquer?

On a satin finish, you'll need to re-coat. Wet sand with 400 or 800 grit to smooth, then re-coat.
BTW, you'll need to remove the paint from the lug nut seats before you put them back on the car. Should have masked them off before painting. |

This one came out nearly dust free. The second one is rather dusty. Going to try and sand it out and recoat. I am curious to try the Wurth Matte paint to see how it compares.
