Smile I've decided to keep the Carrera.....now let's have some fun!

Well, it's not a sellers market right now, what can I say. I am satisfied with my 85 Targa and decided it was time to just enjoy it. With just 47,xxx miles, it is probably running better than it ever has since I've owned it! My house deal is done- so selling it is not required anymore. We even have an extra garage to keep her in now! I think what I've learned from trying to sell it is that unless you have something special-you got nothin'!! Meaning: my car ain't no RS, or speedster, it's just another carrera with low miles that hasn't been abused yet! I appreciate all of your responses to my previous thread about selling it/prices, ect. A couple of my buddies and fellow pelican heads have been trying to get me on the track with it for some time now-I think I'm going to do it.

I guess I should start organizing the next Atlanta Pelican Mountain Drive to kind of "seal the deal" myself. Anyway, thanks again for your input and I'll see y'all around.

Hey Doug,

Glad to hear your intentions. As far as tracking the car, you don't know what you are missing. It is by far some of the most fun you will ever have while driving a car....period. Sign up for a Drivers Ed. NOW, before you miss your window this season.

And don't think that tracking the car is abusing it......done the correct way is just fine for the car. Remember, your car was built for the track, now use it.

Once you attend your first day, you will NEVER want to sell that car. If you do, you'll only end up with another type of 911. It's addicting, and most people who have been on a track know what I'm talking about.

As you know, I bought my car a bit over a year ago with 47,xxx miles (your twin sister). Today, it's got 57,500. No garage queen over here. DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE!!!! Enjoy the hell of her.

Best of luck. Looking forward to seeing your post regarding your experience.

By the way, gorgeous house!!

regards,

Good choice Doug!

Now put her on the track...DE and autocross will put a smile on your face that will stay there for quite some time .
I have done a couple autocross events and I could not imagine the joy they would bring until I had participated...now I can't wait until the next event!

"I think what I've learned from trying to sell it is that unless you have something special-you got nothin'!! Meaning: my car ain't no RS, or speedster, "

An unfortunate, but true, statement. I sometimes have people question me on why I would dare to change anything on my 71T. It's the same deal: doesn't matter how nice or well-documented my car is, it is of limited value because it is not an S. So, I'm going to modify it to suit my tastes, drive the hell out of it, and have fun! -- Curt

Doug - you should try to participate in the autoX this coming Saturday and sign-up for the DE Aug. 24-25. I think you made the right choice. Besides, now you have a great place to keep it. Wife drug me out tonight looking at houses - my only requirement is separate bay for the pcar!

Congratulations Doug. You have an awesome car. Now that the decision is made, I'll bet you're sleeping better!

Once I get mine fully sorted (suspension upgrades, clutch, etc.), I'll be ready for many Mountain Drives to come.

Best regards and enjoy your new house.

Thumbs up Beautiful car.

and house to match. With that yard, you'd better save some garage space for a riding mower.

If that car would not sell with its looks and mileage, the others on the market are in for a very difficult time

Good choice Doug. If you keep it as nice as I know you will, you can always sell it later but you may not be able to find as nice a car later. Nice Carreras are getting hard to come by. You gonna make the auto-x on Sat? It ain't Road Atlanta, but it's a hell of a lot of fun. I've been off the board for a while and don't know about a drive this Sat. as mentioned by Sean, but I'd rather auto-x now and cruise in the fall. Cheers. Ray

Doug,

Congrats on making a firm decision. Now though, no more excuses. Time for autox and Road Atlanta...then again...based on how you are riding that Go-Ped, you may be passing me in no time!!!

Huh.... wouldn't it depend on what he was asking for it? If I remember right, Doug was asking about $28k for this car.

Doug...
Nice to see the car and congrads on the house. Nothing beats a garage!

I thought for awhile there you dropped out, because I was expecting a gathering of 911's for a mountain run this summer.
Nice to see you back in the fold my friend.

I have a major AC question for you.....
I have to replace three of my old red cloth hoses, the longest being the one that runs from the compresssor to the evaporator.
Its been tough finding someone in town, besides the Hose Wizard in Logainville who supplies fittings and barrier hose.
I could use some much needed guidance from an experienced AC man on this. You already convinced me of R12. With vinyl seats and 90+ heat, needless to say I feel like I am driving in a sauna! Any advise on vendors or suppliers?

Thanks
Bob

Great looking car. Could you post a picture of the back of it showing the tail? I've got an '85 as well & have thought of adding the tail. Yours doesn't look as obtrusive as some I've seen... maybe its just the color.
regards,
jlex.

Welcome to the dark side, Doug

Little doubt that you will have the prettiest stock 85 on the track. Be warned that the DE thing is a drug - won;t be long before you are thinking about wider wheels and rubber, stiffer suspension, safety gear, and more.

Try to avoid all that, maybe with the exception of wheels and tyres, for the first season or two. You will be amazed at what your car can do in its stock form, and there is plenty of scope to learn to drive a smooth line without tweaking the car at all.

PCA DE is a great way to start - good instruction, very low cost, and [for you] one of the finest tracks in the country as your home turf - Road Atlanta! Enjoy it man - beats polishing any day!
Regardz,

I'm sure you will be happy with your decision. I went though a similar set of emotions - my 87 with 64K miles was starting to feel like a garage queen. I've been to three AutoX recently and I can't imagine what else one would do with a Porsche. They are made for the track. That being said, I still dislike parking lots and door dings, but I'm very happy to accept the wear and associated chips from taking the car out on the track and truly enjoying it.
