"Correct" place to Jack up the rear of the 911

I ran across this in a search a few months back, and didn't have luck looking for it again. I know opinions vary, but I am looking for the answer to "what's the correct way to jack up the motor on the car (while installed)?"

I have done it with blocks of wood and newspaper under the sump, etc., but I'd like to know where "they" designed the motor to be jacked up....

I guess while on topic, what's the safest way to jack up the front as well?

Thanks

I always use a newspaper on the sump for jacking at the rear. Believe I read that is the proper procedure in my 101 projects book. The front I'm not so sure but I believe it may be the a-arms.

You will get various answers on this point. Some say to not jack on the sump of magnesium engines because they can distort (only jack an aluminum crankcase, like yours), but elsewhere this is not mentioned.

Actually, I'd like a truly clear answer on this, too. Jack a mag engine?

Not sure what is "correct", but this is how I do it, if I want to lift the entire rear.

Now that's interesting. I haven't seen this method before.

only real way (approved) is from the jack points with the adapters with a good shop jack(s) and jackstands. one side than the other. there is a thread on here where a jack punched a hole in the engine case, an expensive lesson. the engine rear mount looks good but the engine hangs on the mounts and now the whole car is pushing up. wonder what that does to the mounts?

crap, didn't read that link, oh well....

This is hugely debated. I play it safe and stay away from the engine.

I jack by the motor if the tires are not coming off the ground....

If I need the tires off the ground I do side lifts and stands

Whats wrong with using the factory jacking points in the sills and sticking an axle stand under the torsion bar?

I tend to lift both sides at the same time, two jacking pads, two trolley jacks and two axle stands.

Most guys don't have two jacks....I don't. I've done it both ways, one side at a time and on the seam of the motor case. I definitely cringed a little bit when I first used the motor method but I thought "Wayne does it" and it works brilliantly. My stands are quite high (even fully lowered) and I find the angle of the car a little concerning when doing one side at a time (a lot of side thrust when starting to lift the other side). Anyway, lots of experience on this board, choose your poison. Cheers

I think this is one of the frustrating quirks about the 911, no obvious jacking points. I don't really want to jack up one side at a time.

I jack it up from the engine sump plate on my 83 SC. I use a folded newspaper (for best results a Wall Street Journal) between the jack surface and the sump plate. Been doing it that way for 10+ years no problem.

I used a 2x4 and jack it right where the bell housing of the gearbox mates to the engine, putting load on both components.

I was jacking my 74 up by the sump plate as per 101 projects. I dented the sump plate up once and had to replace it as I was worried about oil flow and the possibility of dislodging the oil pump pick up. Now I have been lifting the car by the case seam just aft of the sump plate. Didn't think about tweaking the mag case however.

Bent my sump plate too and I had the jack heavily padded. Like you mentioned, this is particularly scary because of the oil pump pick-up tube that is just above the sump plate. I'll never use the sump plate again.

Weltmeister makes a tow hook / jack pad that bolts to the front of the case. Google it b/c Pelican doesn't carry it.

I have one on the shelf but never installed it b/c it requires longer bolts. Kind of a pain.

Weltmeister jack pad and tow hook

Many jack from the engine but I won't. There was a picture around here of a jack that slid off to the side and punched a hole in the bottom of the case.

Side to side for me. Takes a few more minutes, but no big deal.

build yourself a set of ramps and youll find you rarely need to jack it up. and when you do you can get the jack under the A arms easy

I would never jack my 911 by the engine,..nor would my Porsche wrench (he's mentioned that LONG ago). There's just no need if you've other means. For me, I wouldn't do,..though many have (and do).

Best,

Doyle
