Stupidest 1st ride. What was you dumb moment?

Went on the 1st ride today after 2.5 years. Pull out of garage washed it,mt son jumped in and said "lets go". I was so excited, I jumped in put it in gear and off we went. Had a little problem with the clutch, felt it was not smooth. Went about 2.5 miles and back down my block. I went to pull the emergency brake, IT WAS ON THE WHOLE RIDE! STUPID! What was your dumb move?

Can't imagine a turbo V8 cared very much that the emergency brake was on...

When I went to go look at my car (had not even owned it yet), I get in it with the PO, he hands me the keys, I was so excited I did not see it was in gear. Kicked the engine over and almost drove it in to the front wall of his garage. That being said I bought the car 12 hours later.

Regards
Dave

I started mine while in first gear the other day... luckily no one was parked in front of me and no one saw it happen either... call me the idiot.

Why haven't you driven the car in 2.5 years?

Lol, I did the same thing, except the car was pointing into the street.

Stupidest thing I ever did with a 911 was driving my old boss' 1971 T at high speed on an onramp, lifted off the throttle almost spun it into the ditch then proceeded to drive it at an indicated speed of 135mph on the highway. A few days later my boss told me his mechanic told him the car was unsafe, the entire underside was rusted out.

That was in the late 80's. I'm no longer such a menace on the street 20 plus years later.

I was restoring it. This was built in my garage. It did not have the turbos that was my brainstorm. It's killing me now!

2 I guess:

1. 996 - taking a 90-degree turn with a decent bank at around 70 MPH and before car was completely through the exit, pinned the throttle and the rear tried to swap ends. Being my first 911, I thought recovery was coming but I had a great lesson in physics regarding the rear engine. Luckily, the 295's kept it from doing a 180 after 3 times aiming at the ditch or guardrail. I had to wipe once I got to work.

2. '87 Carrera - gave a coworker a ride and took it through the gears up to about 110. Thought I'd show off my impressive brakes and slammed on them right after throttle. Rear started fishtailing to the point I thought we were done. Luckily again, the rear finally calmed down and I had to wipe again once back at work.

These two incidents have really made me realize I need to learn more about the characteristics of these cars at limit and learn better control.

That is funny, I can see that happening to me.

First few days using the 911, I always forget the ignition keyhole is on the left.

Buddy and I are driving down the highway towards Calgary from Red Deer....his father's truck (GMC 1/2 ton)....felt a bump...and suddenly a wheel goes flying by...we laugh...someone lost a wheel...truck starts to sink on the passenger side at the rear....then it hits us...it's our wheel!
You cannot imagine how far a wheel will go when it leaves a vehicle at about 60 MPH!
It took me 1/2 hr to walk down the road to retreive it.
Took some nuts off the other 3 wheels...got it back on...tightened ALL the nuts (all were loose from tires being rotated)...continued the run with red faces.
Bob

My "OH SHEEIT" moment was forgetting to latch the hood. Took off from a stop sign ,..shortly after shifting into 2nd gear, the bonnet hood opened...ultimately, it was a perfect dance as I was able to brake just right to not allow it to fully open,..then settle it (the hood) back down gently....very impressive,..and damned lucky, at minimum.

Ask me if I (now) check that damned thing X4 whenever I'm in there working BEFORE DRIVING HER?.....will never forget pulling in to the Ace Hardware store parking lot, right after the "event"...,..parked her,..quickly jumped out to inspect what surely must have been "an obvious failure of the latch assembly" (exactly: the idiot owner [ME] forgot to close it completely......very embarrassing......quite funny looking back...I assure you: you can't see squat with the damned hood opened at +30 MPH

So far,..so good! (,..geeze,..that happened on NOT the first drive,..I just realized that...I never had an actual "1st drive" moment).....

BEST!

Doyle

1. Filling the sump before putting the drain plug back in.

2. Working on my motorcycle, not hooking up the fuel lines, turning on the "gas" to go for a ride. 1st curve was a wild ride with the rear tire covered in gasoline.

3. ***IHaving a house like the one in your photo and putting it on the market six months too late in 2007 ***

Dumb, moment?? 1st (I remember) Not in a P-car... I 'buried' the speedometer on my Mother's new '66 Galaxie 500 convertible.. I thought the speedometer was broken off the end, fortunately, it was not.. Biased ply tires, you other old guys will understand..lol I still have the car today.. Wouldn't think of trying that again even with the radials on it now.. I'm spoiled by P-cars and Mustang turbos (poor man's Porsche).....
