MFI Velocity Stack refinishing Q

I just read with interest the thread on using RIT dye to recolor plastic parts. The velocity stacks on the early MFI's are plastic and mine are not all that pretty to lok at! So, I was wondering if anyone has tried the RIT technique on them or used some other technique to bring them back to life?

thanks,
Michael

Michael, I found that mine responded to 0000 steel wool and plastic polish and the color came back just fine. The steel wool removed the crud, overspray etc. and the plastic polish (Mequires) took care of the rest.
I'd be curious if anyone else has tried other methods.
BTW, while you have the stacks off, check the mating surface- you might find it's warped a bit. You can easily surface it using a large, flat piece of glass and some sandpaper.

where to find the gaskets?

I've looked at all the normal places and don't seem to be able to find the gaskets that go between the velocity stack and throttle bodies. Maybe I'm going blind? Anyone know where I can find these?

I use some hylomar HPF gasket dressing in addition to the gaskets mentioned. It gives me a little more peace of mind and reduces the urge to tighten down the stacks (and warp them) to get rid of suspected intake leaks.

You would think it gets messy, but actually it's not that bad, and it comes right off with a paper towel next time you pull the stacks off.

Hylomar is available at Pep Boys et al.
