RS fiberglass bumpers on an early Targa?
Does anyone have an early (69-73) Targa with RS style fiberglass bumpers on it? Does it look acceptable, or is it too racy for a Targa? The back is probably no big deal assuming rear flares, but does the front (with closed oil cooler intake) look ok?
I'm trying to find a picture, does anyone have one? Thanks.

Heres a few pics of a 72 that I put RS flares and f/g f/r bumpers on back in the 70s
![]() ![]() ![]() Note the polished 7 & 8 x15 Fuchs w 215/60 & 235/55 tires(high tech back then!) also ANSA 4 out let exhaust in the center area of the rear valance(Bad idea as all the exhaust gas was sucked into the Kamm vortex coating that area with oily soot) also Cibie headlights.

Bill - Looks great. The ducktail is a nice touch too. It looks like you had black horn grilles and lens trim too, was that a common "upgrade"?

Very nice!
I was wondering how the duck tail looked on a targa....now I know! Would it be a sin if I added it to mine? ChadC 71 911S Targa |

Isn't changing any interior, exterior, or mechanical feature of a 911S a sin anyway?

Another very nice Targa!
Im new to this whole Porsche thing, so pardon my ignorance..... The RS style bumper is one piece like the pic above(red Targa), whereas stock is one piece with the chrome bumperettes(like the green Targa at the top). That is my dilemma-original or not. I know its been beatten to death here....what are peoples opinions re:modifying an S as opposed to leaving it stock. Im not trying to start anything, but I'd like educated opinions on this matter. I'd also like to post a pic of my Targa, but I cant figure out how to! Help!! Thanks! ChadC Kailua, Hawaii |

I think it could be made to look very good, Jeff (I guess Bill's old car proves that). Also, this might help cement the deal for you:
Porsche originally planned to produce a 911S 2.7 for model year 1973 - not a "Carrera RS". The S2.7 would be identical to the S2.4 except for rear fender flares, wider rear wheels/tires and the motor. They produced magazine advertisements and planned to sell 1200 of them in Europe alone - 750 Coupes and 450 Targas. 500 of the 750 Coupes would be produced in a "lightweight version" for homologation purposes. In the end, Porsche decided to produce only the S2.7 Lightweight Coupe - the 210 HP "Targa RS" was put on hold! The S2.7 name was eventually changed to the more chic 'Carrera RS'. The Carrera RS Targa was resurrected in 1974, complete with rear flares, ducktail and "Carrera" sidescript. Oh yeah, and safety bumpers too! ![]() |
