HD vs Sports on front of '87
I know this subject has been beaten to death and opinions are just opinions, but I will ask one last time before placing my order.
I just received my new shoes from TireRack - awesome service by the way - I ordered on Monday and received Wed am! Had to go with the Yoko AVS Intermediates as the price is too attractive to justify the SO3's that cost over twice as much. Plan to upgrade torsion bars maybe next year, but for now its going to be tires, shox, align, corner balance, lower. Are the hd fronts ok with my plan - I only drive the car for pure street fun and the occasional DE event. Many people recommend the HD front instead of sports due to lots of poor quality roads out there. I have heard that the sports are really not valved too differently? How does one decide? No other car around to compare.

Randy,
Choice of shocks really depends on your longer term suspension plans. If you are staying with stock torsion bars, then I'd stick with Bilstein sports. The real trick with our suspensions is that lowering the car reduces the amount of suspension travel available. Less travel, combined with the fairly soft factory torsion bars, means that you can bottom the suspension fairly readily. That said, the HD setup works for street. For track, you might want to read up on the issues - stiffer T bars and lowering do best with shocks that have raised spindles and appropriate valving.

Hmmm - I thought Sports were stiffer than HD's? I seem to recall that some folks use HD fronts and Sport rears - though my plan was to use HD's on all corners.
Interested in learning more here...

HD are softer than sports. The general consensus is a softer shock in the front of a 911, due to the small amount of weight up there.

Randy W,
The reason I asked this question again is because of your comment in another post recommending the HD up front. I read the article in Excellence about your car and all the changes you made to your suspension based on experience and track time. Your opinion is why I am second quessing my earlier decision to go Sports all the way around.

I agree with Randy, I've recently had both combos on my car sport/sport, and HD/sport. I prefer the hd/sport combo.

Randy Wells,
So you recommend HDs in the front and Sports in the back, even for a car used for several autocrosses and DE events a year. I still have the stock torsion bars BTW. I can't help but think that I will have increased oversteer going from the OEM Bilsteins (Green). What do you think? Thanks, Noel |

HD's up front. I had HD's in the front, Sports in the rear with Neatrix bushings. This was a GREAT combination and I have a few autocross plaques to prove it. On the wall, not in the arteries I hasten to add. . .
