whats the deal with my DIST
this is a 930 dist but it is more or less the same as an SC dist so i am posting here in hopes of more eyes on this.
background: i have had a miss in my 930 since i got it. idle is better but 2k up until boost comes in is bad. i have been though EVERYTHING! compression is 120 on the left side and 130 on the right leak down is 4% for all cam timing for both sides is the same fuel head fuel volume for all 6 is good, with injectors they are dead even valves adjusted did another leak down today, same as before plugs, wires and cap have been swapped. (old wire to dist cap) and same rotor. all 6 plugs look the same i have new clewett wires and plugs. installed MSD and blaster coil. AFR at cruise was 16+, now it is 15 to 15.4. i still suspect an air leak since it is lean. on boost it is low 11's, idle is 12.1 i was changing wires and cap and i was inspecting the green coil wire. it looked like it had been stretched where it went into the wiring harness. (the green was kinda white) so i started investigating the wire. i was getting 680 ohms on the wire going into the dist, but when i turned the rotor, it would jump up to around 2k or more, sometimes it would show an open. (i have looked at the signal out of the dist with my O scope and it looks clean, but that is at idle). HERE IS THE MEAT OF IT: so i pulled the dist apart and noticed the vac advance/retard has been shimmed. i assume to change the amount of advance and or retard. anyone ever checked the resistance while turning the rotor? ![]() ![]()

that open on the green wire is disturbing, try by using a known good wire from the CDI to the dissy, the vacuum should not be a issue, in fact, you can disconnect it

Remove the green wire from the distributor and check resistance from coil pack leads.
S/B in the 600 range. When you turn the dist your are making and breaking the magnetic field that triggers the CD unit. Don't know if that impacts resistance.

the green wire checks good even though it does not look good. i moved, twisted and pulled on it with the MM connected and it was fine. i ohmed the coil out of the dist and it was fine, 607 ohms.
it looks like the shims under the vacuum advance may give me a few degrees more advance with vacuum. i put it back the way it was. when i put the MSD in and cranked it up it ran very bad. it had 50 degrees of advance at least. when i tried to set the timing i did not have enough adjustment. i started to pull the dist and rotate it to make it work then i decided to swap the 2 wires from the MSD going to the dist. it fired right up and ran fine. anyone that puts in an MSD just remember you have to swap the violet and green wire from the MSD.
