Odometers quit but Speedometer works

The odometers on my 1979SC with 213,500 miles suddenly quit. Both the main odometer and reset odometer stopped. The speedometer reading still works fine. I assume both work off the same cable so I'm thinking that this means the cable and cable connectors are fine and the problem is within the speedometer unit itself? I won't have to climb underneath if my logic is right. If not, I'll start looking at the entire system.

Plastic gear took the death march.

Send it out for a repair or do it yourself. More than a couple of threads on this.

Some say it isn't a bad repair.....my expereince is send it the the pros.

The bezel needs to be pried off like a can of Spam......then installed back.....easy to screw it up.

what he said ....

search or call hollywood speedo or paloalto

Every SC has that problem. Just had my 79 SC speedometer repaired at North Hollywood Speedometer. Fast turn around, couple of days, re calibrated. $130. Probably will go for another 30 years.

1979 uses an electronic speedo....no cable ( unless you mean electrical cable).
Ship it or try fixing it yourself. I got lucky and repaired mine with no trouble.

Thanks. When they are sent for repair, can they keep the mileage on them or must they be reset?

Nico911 05-11-2013 06:41 PM

My advice : don't mess with it, send it to the pros

I had the very same problem and sent mine to North Hollywood Speedometer. It took 2 weeks to have it back (from Montreal) and it's back in the car. I'll road test it tomorrow but I assume it should work...

If you do send it to repair, don't forget to mark you wires. On mine, there were 11 wires...

They will keep the mileage as is unless instructed otherwise.

(I actually had them add miles to our 993 as my wife had to keep driving it for 50+ miles a day while it was out for service)...yep, I'm honest and like to keep accurate mileage. ;-)

Cooper. Funny you mention this. I could have the mileage reduced on mine and resale the car with a greater profit in a few years and nobody would have noticed (car is in a very good shape and doesn't show his 138k miles), but I can't stand dishonest behaviors like that, so I didn't. :p

I did it myself. Really not that difficult.

Same here. I'll add about 100 miles put on since it broke. I'll pull it tomorrow and toss the cover on the car until it gets back.

That's good to know although I'll probably take this opportunity to swap out for several weeks. It's supposed to hit the upper 80's next week and I don't have a working A/C on the SC. I'll take this opportunity to fix the speedometer and the steering wheel bushing. I noticed up and down movement in my steering wheel the exact day the odometer failed.

While I wait on the odometer fix and parts for the steering wheel, I'll put some miles on the C4S. I was looking for an excuse to swap out. ;)

Old photo, the 993's been lowered from SUV height since this picture, with PSS9's and clear corners added.
