Odometers quit but Speedometer works
The odometers on my 1979SC with 213,500 miles suddenly quit. Both the main odometer and reset odometer stopped. The speedometer reading still works fine. I assume both work off the same cable so I'm thinking that this means the cable and cable connectors are fine and the problem is within the speedometer unit itself? I won't have to climb underneath if my logic is right. If not, I'll start looking at the entire system.

Plastic gear took the death march.
Send it out for a repair or do it yourself. More than a couple of threads on this. Some say it isn't a bad repair.....my expereince is send it the the pros. The bezel needs to be pried off like a can of Spam......then installed back.....easy to screw it up.

Every SC has that problem. Just had my 79 SC speedometer repaired at North Hollywood Speedometer. Fast turn around, couple of days, re calibrated. $130. Probably will go for another 30 years.

1979 uses an electronic speedo....no cable ( unless you mean electrical cable).
Ship it or try fixing it yourself. I got lucky and repaired mine with no trouble. Odometer Gear replacement for Electronic Speedometers (long)

Thanks. When they are sent for repair, can they keep the mileage on them or must they be reset?

My advice : don't mess with it, send it to the pros
I had the very same problem and sent mine to North Hollywood Speedometer. It took 2 weeks to have it back (from Montreal) and it's back in the car. I'll road test it tomorrow but I assume it should work...
If you do send it to repair, don't forget to mark you wires. On mine, there were 11 wires... Nico

They will keep the mileage as is unless instructed otherwise.
(I actually had them add miles to our 993 as my wife had to keep driving it for 50+ miles a day while it was out for service)...yep, I'm honest and like to keep accurate mileage. ;-) Cooper |

I did it myself. Really not that difficult.

While I wait on the odometer fix and parts for the steering wheel, I'll put some miles on the C4S. I was looking for an excuse to swap out. ![]() Old photo, the 993's been lowered from SUV height since this picture, with PSS9's and clear corners added. ![]()
