Twin Plug/Twin "Digital" 6AL??

Gang,

Anybody running the new MSD "Digital" 6AL units in a twin plug application.

I'm looking to replace two factory 6-pins with:

2 Blaster Vibration coils
2 Digital 6AL's

I've yet to find a diagram using the new digital 6AL's in tandem with a twin plug. Any help would be appreciated.

E.

What type of trigger are you using? Distributor mag sensor or crank trigger?
What is the MSD part #

I believe that is exactly what I'm running, and it has performed flawlessly for the 4100 miles since the build was finished. Tony and Marco at TLG Auto have a lot of experience with this set up.

I'll check in with Marco tomorrow. Thanks for that info.

I'm running one of Aaron's dizzy's. They are the 6425's that Craig is showing there. I backdated the Blasters to look the part. Not sure if my boxes will fit where I have the factory boxes now though.

What do you mean by tandem? Each box works either the uppers or lowers. They are not hooked up in tandem.
There are 2 sets of pick up wires coming off the distributor. One set goes to one of the MSD boxes, you designate as lower. That box goes to one of the coils, you designate as lower. That coil goes to the lower input on the distributor, and from there the 6 wires run to the lower plugs.
Same for the other, just all uppers.
Unless the digital is something different, it is pretty simple to set up the system.

I used red wires for uppers and blacks for lowers. I made a new mounting board out of aluminum and put my boxes and little fuse box on the left. Coils are on the firewall, attached to a piece of flat bar that is attached to existing holes in the firewall.

It appears the only difference between my set up and Dipso's is the transverse location of the coils and MSD boxes. I have my coils mounted under the plastic cover on the left side.

I can't take pictures of the coil mounting, as my car is currently at the shop being prepped for a track day on Thursday.

You can see from this zoom where it all is. Both coils are mounted under the cover. It looks clean and tiddy.

Craig, Do the digitals hook up the same as regular MSDs? I think that was the question.
If so, the description I gave is accurate, right?
I don't know if I understood the original question correctly.

The MSDs should come with a diagram of a twin plug set up, or the distributor should or something. I know i saw something somewhere.
If not, there should be diagrams online.

To be honest, I had nothing to do with it. Tony at TLG mounted it all up when he redid my wiring after the paint. Jeff Erickson at Aase Motors put the motor in and connected up all of Tony's work. All I know is that it runs great!

...I'm a lot better at Excel spreadsheets than I am working on my car.

"In Tandem" meaning (more or less) at the same time. A literal meaning could mean either side by side or strung end to end so (or series or parallel)... In my usage, it really meant nothing other than having two boxes vs. one as some run this setup. I kinda realize one will be running the top and one will be running the lower set of plugs.

My dizzy has one set of pickup wires which would be one of my questions. Others include the need for a tach adapter or not with the digitals, etc. The schematic I saw for Porsche wasn't lining up with the harness I have but that's a small issue as long as I can verify against the current 6-pin set-up. I'll see if I can get my current harness mapped out and chat with Marco tomorrow.

I may have to change swap locations of the coils and the boxes. Not sure if there's enough room where I currently have the factory boxes:

Kinda crowded already once the engine gets in there:

You can use this as a reference, same as a 6al wiring...... Dis-regard the automatic coil selector, coil wires go to twin plug distributor cap & you can splice your 2 cd box trigger wires together into one connector if you have only one coming out of the distributor. Check with the distributor manufacturing company on the correct polarity depending on the color of their wires. Some are the same as MSD, some are not.

that is for a back up (nascar) setup, not for a dual plug setup, but close, just remove that coil switch and add a dual plug dissy and run the trigger to both units

You can buy a pigtail that will run both MSDs off of of one pick up. I use one, eventhough my distributor has 2 pickups.
JB Racing is where I bought it.
