First "Issue" w Our New 3.2 Carrera (Cold Start)

I did a "cold start" search and couldn't find anything. (..admittedly, I gave up after tiring of sifting through all the CIS questions..)

So we have a "new to us" 3.2 Carrera that we bought from fellow Pelican Kurt V (Rot 911). The car has performed flawlessly overall and we're very happy with our purchase. The car has almost 150k on her, but the motor was rebuilt just a few K ago.

Yesterday morning I had a little cold start "issue" that I though I'd run by you guys and see if it's anything worth worrying about. Basically, the car would start but seemed to be lacking in fuel to keep running, so it would stall right away. It took a few tries, but eventually (with a little throttle holding by myself) it would run just fine. It did this twice, but by the drive home had no issues at all. So...

7:00 AM - 42 degrees outside - maybe a little warmer in the garage - car was driven the previous day - Starts right away then stalls. Turn the key again...starts right away then stall. Repeat a couple of times, with me easing in a little throttle. Finally starts and holds. Zero other problems on 8 mile drive to work.

11:12 AM - 56 degrees outside (sunny) - Heading out to lunch I get one start and stall. Start it again and hold a little throttle for a few seconds...car runs fine. A few stops over lunch with zero issues.

4:21 PM - 62 degrees outside (sunny) - Car starts as normal and runs flawlessly home.

Anything to worry about....???

BTW here's our girl at work yesterday. She looks a little different than how Kurt left her.

It may just be a simple issue of adjusting the throttle linkage and making sure the micro switch on the throttle body is set correctly.

I would drive it for a few weeks more and keep jotting down your notes and observations like you have been doing so you've got a solid baseline before tearing into things.

Idle Control Valve(ICV) may need to be cleaned. A common issue. Spray some carb cleaner through it and see if it helps.

A good place to start, and will cost you only a shot or two of carb cleaner.

Thanks all for the input (and congrats!). I'll definitely start with simple and go from there. Maybe run some FI cleaner through the system as well. I'll post if I have any more troubles. Sounds like nothing to sweat over yet.

ICV or CHT sensor.

CHT sensor can be checked with a multimeter.

My Carrera 3.2 is doing exactly the same thing!! Only on the first start of the day and requiring moderate throttle pressure for the first 30 seconds after start up. Then it runs fine for the rest of the day.
What is the CHT? Where is it located??

Friendly, the CHT is the cylinder head temperature sensor, and the sensor portion is located in the #3 cylinder head. The plug portion is located in the sensor bank on the left hand side of the engine, and is marked with a white plug above 2 black plugs.

Doug, just saw your post! My cold weather start up was always hold the gas pedal down 1/4 of the way and turn the key. Always started. The idle would fluctuate up and down for about 30 seconds and then settle down. Try that and see how it runs.

ICV and all sensors are approximately 8 years old. As I recall I think I even gave you and old, working, spare ICV.

As I've re-read your post, I'd say it's more likely the ICV than the CHT sensor.

Thanks, she drives great! Got a few "projects" to do with her, but keep me posted on any runs. If she's together, we'll be there. And if we still have the 912E, Julie may drive on her own!

Thanks for chiming in Kurt! I couldn't remember if you'd mentioned anything about a cold start routine...we talked about so much I wouldn't be surprised if I forgot part of our conversation.

The car is turning over ok, just stumbling a bit while cold. Sounds like it's not a big deal...so I'll get to it when I can.

Right now, I've got another project in the works...

if you suspect cht. just unplug it before the first start of the day and start it. if it fires right up and keeps running it is the cht.
better plug it back in before it warms up tho

So just to update, since it took over a month for NHSpeedo to finish my gauges (they're a bit busy!)...I installed the gauges yesterday and tried to start the car, only to find the battery dead (not surprised). So after an overnight on the tender she fired right up this morning with no start issues or hesitations. I'm thinking the cold air temps might have had something to do with it, so I'll have to wait until Fall to further update this thread.

(If we still have the car... ...was laid off on 6/7 and it looks like we're going to try to move west. Trying to hold onto the 911, but you just never know...)
