Can You Turn 996 Rotors?

Can you turn 996 cross drilled rotors?

Arne2 05-14-2013 03:51 PM

It's my understanding that no cross-drilled rotors can be turned. The machine tip would catch on every hole.

Sorry to hi-jack, but never considered this, I have a 78 SC, with standard rotors, can these be rotated? And what is the benefit?

Yes, they can be turned, but labor rates are such that it is often less expensive to just buy new.

This isn't true - I've turned my 930 type rotors several times, the bit is held so firm by the lathe it passes right over the holes. Remember, it's not being 'pressed' into the rotor, just held in place. But I agree, they have become so cheap I now just buy new ones.

I bought new rotors when I fitted 996 brakes - set of 4 Balo rotors was $300 drop-shipped. They came in Sachs waxed paper.

For that money, it's hardly worth messing about. '78-79 930 floating front rotors at $350 a pop? Yeh, I would think it would be worth turning those down...

They are not "turnable" rotors but you can turn them. BTDT.

Catch my drift? ;)

P.S. - they are very hard on cutters.

Best to check this on some 996 forum...

I just replaced my 996TT rotors which had multiple cracks spreading from the holes with Sebro slotted units ... i highly doubt turning a 996 rotor would be a wise decision seeming as you are removing even more heat absorbing material !

Cheers !

I checked a while ago as my 930 rotors started to give me a little lip. The correct procedure is apparently to have them ground, specifically Blanchard grinding, according to the factory.

Having said that, I have never found anyone who offers Blanchard grinding as a service, and any request of a machine shop that I have made resulted primarily in blank looks and strange comments.

With rotors that have holes, I wouldn't turn them. I'd just buy new.
