What's up with these air cleaners? RSR

This is a shot of the 2.8 RSR engine that was in the recently found Fuhrman company car. (Current issue of Excellence) Now that I've enlarged it I now realize (I think) that it's a slide valve, but what's with the air cleaners?

Looks like custom air filter housings versus open velocity stacks.?

I wondered about that too, how the heck does the air get in? I 'think' if the picture was from the other side you would see a big flat air filter - similar to that in a 3.2 held in by clips; you can just see one of the clips in the photo.

I'm thinking the air gets forced/pulled in through intakes on the pop out lexan side windows. There are probably holes on the rear that we can't see??
Ok wait, looking at the left hand side of each filter housing, maybe there are panel filters and it pulls from that side, thus the clips?

They must be pressurized from somewhere outside the engine compartment? Are there ducts on the rear fenders?

Agree. flat-panel filter on the drivers side of each housing.

those are indeed a custom air filter set up. You can make out the clips for the covers facing the left side of the compartment.
The set up is high butterfly RSR, not slide valve

maybe developed for dusty rally conditions , similar to the SCRS (developed with rally use in mind.) But the pump shown in the picture is the earlier Bosch, not the Kugelfisher the SCRS uses

It's a good article by Excellence, but surprisingly short on photo explanations and engine details.

Seems I never quit seeing new things on these old cars!
