1986 911 Muffler strap queston

What is the difference between the left and right muffler strap for 1984-86 911s? Are the different lengths? If so what are the two lengths. I have one strap but don't know which one it is.

Welcome to the board.

This is the best I could do while the muff was on the car....

I only took the muff off once to add another tailpipe. I believe I reinstalled the same way it was done at the factory.

Seems correct. Here's a pic that Keith Craver (KC911) posted in the past:

My 86 is the same way with the factory muff... right side strap is longer than the left and passes over.

Same with my 87- strap passes around the heat exchanger stainless tube.

Actually when you think about it? The strap passes around the tube because it's the only major support the tube has. If not for the strap, the only things holding the tube to the car are three hose clamps and the associated rubber couplers.

If you give a look to the cross over duct...you will find a welded bracket on...that bracket is supported by the driver side strap...!

Thanks for the correction. I forgot about that. Still proves the straps hold the tube in place!
