Almost a year since I last updated the thread.
(insert suitable 'time flies' analogy) Thankfully the build has progressed, albeit not as much as I would like. Will attempt to fill in the blanks. |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403521325.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403521397.jpg Sills have been patched in the past. It seems the rust was left behind! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403521473.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403521504.jpg |
Into the garage finally.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523082.jpg Started stripping the suspension http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523125.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523160.jpg Roof filled with spare bits. "Better to have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it.." http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523243.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523269.jpg |
Part of the stash we found was a rather sorry LHD 70 Targa.
We decided to donate it's remaining organs to the resto of my mate's 0001 66 S Proto and my humble lawn ornament. Floor pan (nice saving once stripped of the b@$%^%d underseal) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523502.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523589.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523606.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523628.jpg |
Traded the tired 2.7 (Kjet) that was in the car for 2 gearboxes: a 4 speed and a 5 speed 901.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403523914.jpg Engine looks tired cosmetically but complete. It turns and the MFI pump seems to be okay. Will only really know when we get it onto a jig and try and run it. 2.2E with all standard internals (as far as I know). Plan is to run it as is, hopefully won't have to open it up to get it going. May add an alu clutch plate / flywheel for a bit more zing, but otherwise standard spec would should give 155-odd horsepower. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524028.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524064.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524147.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524200.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524221.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524265.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524284.jpg MFI pump is correct for a 2.2E and seems to be unmolested. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524338.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403524590.jpg |
Visited a local specialist to do some parts swapping.
The mechanical mind behind the Dutchman Cars, Tim Abbot. This is the Dutchman Racer in build. Great colour. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403525087.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403525186.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403525207.jpg |
After 9 months at the Panelbeaters (the most useless bunch of idiots in the World) I got my SC back. The wife is not impressed about the fact that her garage is filled with 2 porkers.

A few more pics of The Dutchman Racer with the interior done.

Finally got the car into the jig and sent it off to the sand blaster.
Couldn't face the thought of stripping the underside by hand. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535549.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535572.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535587.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535606.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535623.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535652.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535688.jpg |
Lovely rough, clean metal for the epoxy primer to bond to.....and lots of nasty repairs
Door lock post to sill: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535797.jpg Bottom of the door hinge post: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535813.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535865.jpg Inside the sill cavity. Inner sills look pretty solid but they'll come out when I'm in there. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535901.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535966.jpg Below the torsion bar tube: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403535997.jpg Suspension pan: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403536027.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403536060.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403536083.jpg Lots of rot to cut out but to be honest I thought it would be worse, so not too stressed. |
Went for a spin in one of these.
What a car. Docile and gentle....until you put your foot down. That motor is utterly addictive. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403595732.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403595753.jpg |
Started cutting away the rotten suspension pan and fuel tank carrier.
I spent a few hours drilling out the spot weld on the fuel tank support and then decided to cut out the whole thing and grind away what was left of the seams. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403597511.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403597192.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403597211.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403597230.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403597251.jpg |
I hope I can save the front panel ($600 odd from RD) and patch along the sides and along the bottom. Here is my attempt at creating a patch template.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403598096.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403598111.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403598125.jpg A sort of rally patch.... |
Wow, there is a lot of work there! I'm 50% jealous and 50% relieved that it is not me, haha!
The patch idea looks good. While you are at it, you can also work in a bit of a recess for an RSR style oil cooler... mmmmm... |
Kinda what I'm getting at....
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/506207-elephant-oil-cooler-duct-install.html I know the vision a 911R of sorts, but this could still be a nice touch. |
What does that 2.2 E engine have a green shroud? The green shroud is a midyear 911S item. It should be black on a 2.2E engine.
Don't get me wrong, the green shroud has better air flow but would cause me to look a bit deeper into what this engine actually is. |
Thanks Bear911.
To be honest doesn't feel like I've done that much when I see the car in the garage every day. New steel welded in and everything in primer will be a major milestone. Can't wait for it to be all in primer. Sanding primer gives a sense of progress.....strange considering that after years on shiny boats I can't bare bloody sanding! Chin cooler mod is interesting. Would solve my missing metal problem. But it necessitates an rs front bumper? I have a 's' front bumper. Will run an oil cooler in the wing. I think the rs/r front bumper with oil cooler works on the hips of an rs/rsr. Last week's plan was to keep the skinny hips of this one......but do have a set of original steel carrera flares. |
Green is correct for an early E. T was yellow, E was green, S was red. 73.5 was black over yellow gell coat.
|
It's a 2.2E.
As Flieger correctly details. At numbers / part numbers are correct. The internals may have been changed, the mfi pump recam'd, but I doubt it. 155/160hp in a light car should be more than enough for me. |
Started spraying suspension parts. 2K primer, then satin black.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768067.jpg Good parts to practise my spraying http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768107.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768294.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768320.jpg SWB trailing arms....rare little buggers. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768340.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768381.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403768400.jpg |
