A sort of barn find
Been a reader for a few years now.
Have lived vicariously through the rebuilds and restorations featured here. So perhaps it's only right that now I begin to give back...although it will be hard to live up to the likes of Speedo, Jury and Fishcop (let alone that mad genius who lives near a bridge) I'll give it my best shot. This is what I have found: - 1970 rolling targa chassis - 1967 912 with a 2.7 and 915 - 1970 2.2 targa under a rather nasty flatnose bosy kit - a spare 2.2 E engine The cars were at the end of a parts lead I chased down; left over from an RS rep project. They've been standing for 5 years - in a shed at a steel mill in a high and dry part of the country thank goodness. Probably stood for 5 years before that. A mate and myself are going halves - he gets the targa, I get the swb and we split the rest, reuse or sell. He's most interested in the smooth top headlights from the 912 for the 66 S factory prototype he found in a garage last year! Theres a thread detailing that around somewhere. The 912 is rhd and I was thinking of an R (not another one!). The aforementioned mentors and their diy efforts can take the blame. Some minor resto work on my SC (right before it was smashed) has given me the courage (and perhaps stupidity) to take on the project. I have a wonderfully eccentric mechanic up the road who will help me with the mechanical stuff, i.e he'll drink beer while I spanner, but the rest I'm going to attempt to do myself. I have assembled a garage of pre73 shiny bits over the last year...not with a project in mind, but mainly because I couldn't afford a whole car. Those will come in handy. Here are some pics. I have a sneaking suspicion this car has a story to tell already: - fresh paint on the nose - 912 vin number - 6 cylinder engine mounts (and no sign of 1600 side mounts) - 5 period gauges Might well have had a smash and had a 912 front end, with vin, welded on. By 1967 lots and lots of 912s had the 5 gauge option. Mine does (Prodate 10/66). If you look at the two left gauges, they are different on a 912 than they would be on a 911. If you post of picture of those two, we can tell you more.
Show us your shift knob too, 4spd or 5spd knob? |
I'm fairly sure one could order a 912 with 5 gauges. Cool finds :)

Looks like a 912 tach. Can honestly say I've never seen a 3 gauge '67 912. 5 gauges were standard on the 912 in '67

Those mounts look like 911 mounts. A 912 engine mounts well forward of the 911 mounts. It almost looks like there is a little "shelf" in the back of the engine compartment due to the smaller 912 engine.

I wouldn't rule it out. Usually it is the other way around though, passing a 912 off as a 911. Certainly a quick cleaning will help show if the old mounts were removed and new texture was sprayed. Might even have been rear ended and a rear clip from a 911 installed? Any funky weld lines running through the rear wheel wells?

The area circled looks to me like it might have been altered. I found a couple shots on the internet showing someones swap from 912 to 911 mounts. It can be done in a way to make it very difficult to spot.

A quick update: Have managed to swap steel panels on my car for a full set of fbr panels off a 912 R that a chap wants to return to 912 look. So front fenders, bonnet with centre filler, centre filler tank, bootlid and full set of bumpers. 2.7 engine will be swapped for two 901/911 gearboxes, one of which is e/s spec. I'll then trade the spare 901 and the mag case 915 in the car for labour towards a rebuild of the 2.2 E on MFI and the matching spec gearbox. So essentially the target is 850 kgs with around 160 hp. All I need to do now is finish my garage so I can start stripping and stare the inevitable rust in the face (with no hint of fear!) Project R update aka "The Lawn Ornament"
While the mechanical progress has been slower than anticipated, I have puzzled myself to distraction with options and variables and possibilities: colour combinations, narrow body vs Carrera flares etc etc...a natural reaction to the seemingly endless job of stripping the body by hand I suppose.
Wiring harness detached at both ends, but crucially still very much embedded in the spine of the car...the transmission tunnel is a puzzle. I'm thinking of leaving it in place. Electrics are beyond my abilities. So what's the feeling about sandblasting vs by hand?
To blast I'll have to build a hex jig, remove suspension, get the jigged car to a blaster with two bags of walnuts. Alternative is to keep going by hand while I have the jig built, knowing that certain bits will need a sandblaster to get them clean: - inside doors - fender mounting panel / hinge post - engine tray / suspension tube The idea would be to spend some of the money saved by not sending it out to buy a pot blaster which will help do the above, and clean up suspension parts etc when the time comes. Thoughts? With regards the body, I'm in for the following from the Canadian Metal Fans: - rear windscreen corners - parcel shelf (if I don't canabalise from a G-series or fab) - outer sills - battery tray - front right floor pan I suspect I'll need inner sills, the suspension pan supports. Big bill for me with the exchange rate at 10 to the dollar and silly shipping rates. Have to find another metal man considering I'm in a fight with the panelbeater with the jigs that employs the best one I've come across...all on account of an SC that has taken 8 months to repair! For anyone who works with wood, this stuff really is amazing: brings out the grain and natural colour and provides a very strong sealer at the same time. R Flares
I have a mk 1 Golf (Rabbit in the US).
Still made here in SA until a year or two ago. One of the 'flares' was cut out of the car when I bought it - in anticipation of the previous owner turning it into a lwb RS rep...another one! Had a close look at the Golf and realised the flare was pretty similar (from my uneducated pov) to the general idea of an R flare. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372007040.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372007124.jpg (The square edge and square fold-over will have to be amended....) So, all things being equal, a pretty cost effective way of giving the metal magician the right start. |
So 70mm (not inches) vs. 50mm on the Golf flare.
The square edge of the Golf flare has a good 20 mm in it. With the exchange rate, it's cheaper than buying through TRE...and if it all works I get steel instead of FBG. |
Visiting mates who can see the light at the end of the tunnel is a good way to keep perspective when you're still in the dark of the tunnel!
Picked his brains about all sorts of details. He has invested a huge amount of time in finding and testing the right local suppliers, so his school fees are in fact priceless. His E is in the home straight (apart from a botched touch-up on the rear 1/4 panel). If I was him I would have been in jail for GBH! Apply, dry, clean with thinners and prime. Should work for the transmission tunnel. So this is what I think the order of repair should be. Some input please: - build the hex jig - Strip suspension - send suspension parts off for cad plating / powder coating - send shell to get blasted - take shell straight to a Panelbeater to shoot epoxy sealer - and cut / weld in new panels (restoration design or other) - shoot primer (doors, lids etc as well) - back home to reassemble - will do stone chip underneath, engine bay, and satin black interior myself - refurbed suspension back on - motor and g-box in as is (may get g-box checked before..) - send back to PB (now heavy) for panel gaps and final spray - get engine going in car (hopefully...) - interior installed (....circa early 2015!) Decided to start on the other door and exterior today.
An hour in between meetings. Compared to how long the previous stripping took me, this lot was a massive improvement. - razor blade scraper - heavy duty paint stripper left to sit for 30 minutes - poly wheel to clean up residue Helps to have two sections going at the same time: leave the stripper to sit while you work the other surface. The door skin, the roof and the 1/4s took an hour to get back to bare steel (well almost) Poly wheel really works quickly when you've broken through the paint with stripper. The three numbers on the door should be the same as the last three of your chassis number, and the same numbers should be stamped inside the headlight buckets and on the inner centre rib of the engine lid - that's if they're original to your car. Early swb's had all the panels matched before painting.
The loom comes out from the back of the centre tunnel to the front on swb's (opposite for later LWB cars) I have just finished restoring a 66 swb in this UK thread - might be helpful in a few places as I also had to solve a few puzzles along the way! Just did a quick look at your thread: page one and page 14. Holy moly. Amazing resuscitation there doctor. Will certain spend more than a few hours going through it in detail. My original panels were long gone. Replaced with fbg in a trade. The door hinge has a 5 stamped on it. Thinking maybe I can leave the loom in and work around it. Having to put it back together is a monster in the cupboard for me. Will have a closer look at your process. Thanks again. Matthew |
