911 Work Road Trip?

I have a few days of driving around western and Mid Michigan coming up second half of this week for work. Weather looks good and I am tempted to take the 911. Seems like a good chance to get some time with the new toy.

Anyone else use their 911 for a work trip? I will probably put 400-500 miles on it over a few days. So far, I have only used it for sunny weekend rides and a few 20 minute commutes to the office.

If I had a 1989 Carrera available for any road trip I would NOT hesitate to take a long trip; in fact you should plan on taking it clear acorss the country sometime! Some owners are almost terrified to get into their Porsches and just head out of town fearing the engine will blow, the transmission will fail or the interior will rot!

I take my 1973.5T (yes thats a 40 year old car) down to Florida from Atlanta, GA or up to Tennessee and North Carolina on weekend trips and have throroughly enjoyed it. Its all about getting there!

As a new owner you must know that the 1989 with its G50 tranny and dependable engine is one of the best 911's made. You own the last of the true 911 body cars and its systems are top notch and very dependable. Get your butt out on the road and find out just how much pleasure can be derived taking a road trip in a 911. Nough said.

I put almost 2k per month on mine traveling to my offices :-)

IMHO, it's a great car if you're alone - if you have to pick up people, take them to lunch, airports hotels etc then it's a little small and cramped. And with my EVO seats I'd have to teach people to get in. But alone, which is most of my driving, it's GREAT!

Did it twice in the last month, both trips over 700 miles each. I've owned plenty of cars, and the old 911s have by far been the most reliable of them all.

Back and forth to Vegas, up to San Francisco.
911s are road cars, long drives are awesome.

A had a day trip to do last week, 700km in a day, was a beautiful spring day and a great drive along the north shore of lake superior!

Do it, I would bring earplugs if you're doing much interstate driving - can wear on you and might find your ears are ringing while you're trying to sleep.... my 87 coupe is fine up to 65 or so, but still working on taming some wind noise from the front.

taken my '88 to San Diego and back a couple of times, over 700 miles each way. It seems to run better and drip less when I do this.

Take a spare DME relay, just in case.

This does worry me! These cars are too easy to steal.

That said, I am probably going to cancel my rental car and drive the PCar. Thanks for all the responses.

Why not? Made a spur-of-the-moment, late night, decision last year and took my 79 SC from Los Angeles to southern Utah via Las Vegas to watch the ring-of-fire solar eclipse. No problem! the car behaved examplary.

Just got back from my three day trip with the 911. Had almost perfect weather and the car ran perfectly. Really made the business trip a lot more enjoyable. It's fun to get paid to drive my Porsche! I will try to drop in a couple of pics.
