Odometer issue - a bit different i think

Ok so bought a used mechanical km/h odo and the speedo section works. I can use a drill bit and the odometer will change. I can use the face dial to go through the trip counter.

Seeing as the drill bit thing does change the mileage, does that mean the plastic gear is still the issue or could it be cable?

I am planning on sending the unit to a repairer but being in australia, their arent as many. so want to make sure its the gear that is an issue and not something else?

Speedo part works accurately as well

Thanks

Hi... Re "does that mean the plastic gear is still the issue or could it be the cable"
I'm not quite clear on " still the issue" - You state that the speedo and odometer is working...Being that the drill is turning the speedo and odometer what is the 'issue'?
... If its not working when 'hooked' up of course your speedo cable is broken.

Hi...It appears that when using the drill that your speedo/ odometer are both working...That's great as cables are much cheaper to replace.

The mechanical speedo cables are within an alloy sheave and are very prone to wear through them.

So now go to your tranny and hook your drill up to that end of the cable, and if the speedo / odometer still works then 100-1 the speedometer cables die cast gear assembly on the transmission is shot.

If it is your cable, replace it complete with the outer casing...It is a not the nicest thing to replace due to it hanging up on numerous 'things' as you are pulling it out. You will also be able to get at it from the tunnel under the carpet in the rear seat area. - Likely take an hour with possibly a bit of mumbling -

Our host will have what you will need to get it working.
