Guard Diff OMG!
Drove the car over to 901 shop today to have them install new cage and other items as well as regearing my 915 along with side cover and bearing retainer plate updates.
I have talked with Matt at Guard previously and was very helpful regarding gearing and ramp settings for the diff and knew that they made a great product. Just so happened that 901 shop had a 915 box on the bench and sitting next to it was one of Guard's diffs. I picked the unit up and could not believe the quality and workmanship of the unit, the diff looked like a piece of art! If anyone one is on the fence if they should spend a few more dollars for Guard's diff I would definitely say yes every time! Matt's diff is one great piece of hardware! |

+1. If I was in the market for a locking differential, a Guard unit would be my first choice.

Thanks guys. We work hard at what we do. For those who haven't ever visited the website and are curious, here's our 935 LSD that Bruce Canepa commissioned.

Does the company have any notions toward developing diffs for applications beyond Porsche?

Pavulon,
Can you be more specific? We actually have quite a few LSDs outside of Porsche circles. A pair of our VW Jetta differ cars qualified 4th and 7th for tomorrow's Cota scca World Challenge race. |

Sure. I'd wonder about some of the most popular applications such as 9" Ford, Dana 44...things like that...I may have asked about this in the past...if so, my apologies.

We have a Ford 9". We don't sell enough of them to stock them and only manufacture to order. Something about the $3,000 price tag doesn't set well with that market outside of professional race team. But I might have the one we had in our booth at PRI. I would have to check stock on Monday.

Do you make your other applications under the Guard name? The only stuff I see listed on your website is Porsche.

Yes. We are primarily a wholesale business and the primary focus always has been and will continue to be Porsche parts.
But in the last 4 years since I purchased the company from Paul when he decided to retire I have been systematically pursuing new markets and strategic partnerships with industry leaders. In the last year we released both the VW 6mt LSD and a BRZ/FRS LSD. There are more coming, but as such a small company the website tends to come last. Paul also did certain products that weren't really advertised either. We have an E46 LSD, for example. I have started looking for partners to develop LSDs for the newer BMWs, just like I have done in the VW-Audi market. |

I'm also one of those lucky people to have one. Inherited mine with a racecar purchase, so that was a nice win.
Since we're talking about them, I would like to remove the speedometer magnet ring at some point. The magnets sometimes can come loose and I don't want them getting munched anywhere. I suspect the speedo ring acts as a side bearing spacer/shim. So i'd have to carefully pull the bearing and ensure a replacement shim of same thickness is reinstalled, no? I guess I could just remove the magnets. Still, I don't need that ring spinning around for nothing...... ![]() ![]()

The speedo ring is indeed part of the shim stack.
While it may be similar, that isn't a Guard LSD unless it has the GT logo. |

If the internals exchange with Porsche 915, it would mean that while that isn't actually a GT, it was from the few early style made without GT logo. Do the internal plain plates have square tabs or round ?

Haven't opened it up yet. However I recall seeing in the documentation for the car that one service performed by Motor Werks Racing was rebuilding the diff. Discs with 917 part number were used so I assume it currently has Porsche OEM discs in it, which is not necessarily a good thing either. Would rather see more modern plasma sprayed plates used?
