I'll have to look but I think I have a set of open end lug nuts from my donor car. I'm just not sure how many I have if there are still in one of my boxes.

My next set will be yellow zinc from SMC. I've got the open ended steel in black but agree that this is the way to go:

that 'glass bead' option is beautiful. has a great retro/semi-magnesium look to it. i just ordered 'opens' as well, but for use with a set of Fikses. at $10/pc., price isn't bad at all - over what standard steels will cost you.

Regarding the yellow zinc from Sierra, i've had plated steel lugs in the past and the plating tends to chip/flake off at the edges of the hex tooling. I suppose it depends on how you treat them. If you take them off & on with hand tools, they should be fine. If you remove them with an impact gun, they'll probably chip. |
I was about to purchase Rennline Opens, but it asks for Ball or Conical seat type.
My gut tells me my stock aluminum are ball seat, what kind of Porsche/wheel would have conical? |
Rennline may have chosen to offer two styles of seat since there are aftermarket wheels that use the more common conical seat. I bought a set of ROH wheels years ago and they came with conical lugs.
This website gives you some good information on the different styles of lug nut seats. Track-Studs brand racing wheel studs and lug nuts Click on the ball seat category in the left sidebar navigation menu and then on one of the M14 nuts. Then click the "Detailed Information" tab and you get some interesting info (well, interesting to nerds like me at least.... :D) that says there's also different radius used on the ball/spherical seats Porsche steel lug nut used to replace the alloy lug nut on all Porsche's with a wheel stud conversion completed. Black Oxide, oiled finish. Now mandated for some car clubs, eg. PCA, NASA, SCCA etc. M14x1.5mm with R14mm radius ball seat. Never use 'other' ball seat nuts with R13 seat. Use the correct Porsche nuts. Use ACS nuts! (sold individually) For use only with OE type Porsche wheels with original ball seats. (note: conical seat wheels require our 60 degree nuts) |

Sorry I should have been more clear that the lugs I had were indeed zinc plated, not chrome. Just basing my statements on my actual hands-on experience with use of the plated nuts over a period of several years. Here they are:

Yep the stock lug nuts are ball/spherical seat style.

Sway A Way makes a couple bullnose studs in lengths close to stock.
SWAY-A-WAY - axles, torsion bars, and shocks for trucks, cars, and off-road vehicles - Wheel Studs and Nuts MSI also makes them in whatever length you choose. But in talking with a few friends about them, it's pretty expensive when you've got a small order. MSI Racing Products (click on metric wheel studs) ProSystems gets them from MSI since they're in the same neck of the woods in NC Pro-System, Inc. |
