1988 G50 Needs new clutch
I had an issue with the shifter bushing and it seems I will need a new clutch along with the bushing. Over 200k miles on the vehicle, so looks like I have several options:
1. Quote was about 4000.00 to do the clutch. That I thought was high, but also included fork and any seals that need replacing while the engine is out. Not major seals but thermostat seal and maybe one other. 2. I remember reading members in the LA/South Bay area doing a clutch for about 2200 with parts and labor. 3. If I try and do it with a freund, (practicing my German, just in case) what kit should I order on PP? So, I found this on Pelican. Good write up. Wow! Who pays $4000 to replace a clutch? Where are you located? Maybe a local pelican can help. My G50 clutch was way, way less than that. Will send you a pm.

In Scal, I got 3 quotes year ago. $5000+, $4000, and $2000. I picked the $2000 after talked to a recommended mechanic from this board . Turned out to be $2200 . Let me look for the mechanic who did it for me.
I think this is the place. Parts and labor, include upgrade involved with machining some parts. I picked the spring type. It makes some noise at a certain low RPM. I very rare fall into this situation. AASE Motors 1104 E. Elm Ave Fullerton, CA, 92831 United States Phone: 714.992.2283 Quote:

Once you have the engine out...you get on the very slippery slope of "while I'm in there" thinking.
Things to consider: New fuel lines if they have no been replaced. (this is a must do) Fuel injectors cleaned. valve adjustment Head Temp Sensor Triangle of death reseal Rear brake line replacement CV joint repack Rear control arm bushings. (Nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get at with trans in place) It gets out of hand, I know..... Get a kit from Pelican and see if you can do it yourself. Removing the engine and trans isn't that hard and there is some great instructions here and in other places online. Good luck!

no real experience in clutches yet, but just an observation after looking at your list, you have pilot bearing listed in there twice (same pn anyway) - items 13 and 15.
more slippery slope dept': consider replacing the speed and ref sensors if the insulation isn't cracked - use BMW parts - same bosch quality at half the price.

I live in Hermosa Beach, but though the price was extreme. I get the slippery slope of replacing other parts while the engine is out. But this only included clutch. The hours involved might of been recorded high. 2000+ is palatable. I will call AASe in Fullerton. Does anyone have another recommendation. LA or Orange county is ok.
JCSlowcom: Good list, what is the triangle of death specifically? That might be a good update to do while the engine is out. Looks like I will do the clutch, head temp sensor and triangle of death reseal. Is that the same as the rear seal? xxx Get a kit from Pelican and see if you can do it yourself. Removing the engine and trans isn't that hard and there is some great instructions here and in other places online. Good luck![/QUOTE] Last edited by Evan911; 10-05-2014 at 02:01 PM.. |

This Kit Includes:
SACHS Pressure Plate SACHS Clutch Disc-Spring Loaded Hub SACHS Release Bearing/Kit SACHS Special Lubricant So this is another option I have, its under 900.00, not as intense as the super kit, but this may just do the trick. the super kit is around 1500.. |
