oil pressure relief valve

Please help?
I've read the ultimate OPRV thread, PP threads on OPRVs, Haynes, and looked at pics online. I want to check my valves but I can't find them! All of the pics are close up and I can't locate the part of the engine I'm looking at. Sounds dumb, I know. Can someone please help me to the oil pressure relief valves? Can I remove and check them with the engine/ oil in?
Thanks

there are two. one is ubstructed by the drivers side heat exchanger, or header just at the gearbox side of the oil return tubes. the other is at the front of the motor, near the gearbox facing down. you can change them out with oil in the car, but it is messy. better to time it with an oil change.

Too much oil pressure!

Facts:
On cold startup OP gauge says 4 bar at idle.
At 4K RPM OP gauge says 4.5 bar.
When warm OP gauge snaps down to 2 bar at idle.
At 2K RPM OP gauge says 4 bar.
At 4K RPM OP gauge says 4.5 bar.
The engine smokes (oil) on throttle application.
Intermittently the OP gauge snaps down to 1 bar at idle. After a blip or two of the throttle the smoke stops. When the OP gauge snaps back up to 2 bar at idle the engine smokes on throttle application again.

So:
oil pressure relief valves?
PCV valve?
Other?
Do I service or replace them?
The RPMs drop when I open the oil fuel cap. Is that relevant or normal?

Thanks

Those pressures are fine. The smoking is likely too much oil in the engine.

Until you got down the the smokes at idle part those numbers are close to what I see with my '86 and normal. High at start up when the oil is cold. I'm around 1.5 bar at idle depending on engine temps. Never below 1 bar. You said you've read the other threads but I'll say it anyway. Your engine has two relief valves. One will be working at high RPMs under normal conditions and the second set much higher for when there is a problem.

Smoke on acceleration usually, but not always, points to oil getting past rings. Smoke on deceleration typically points to valve guides. Have you had a compression and leak down test done?

I can't speak to the throttle blips and smoke coming and going. I will say at idle my gauge needle with flicker a little. -J

like aircraft, the gages in the car should never be used to troubleshoot pressure problems, only a calibrated gage should be used. A pain i know but them gages can't be trusted.
