If you use anything but the 'correct' 'T' P&C, the weight and compression ratio will be different for that cylinder, surely resulting in vibration and roughness problems!

Question

Warren, what am I looking for here, do I need to pull the old before I try and find the new? I had a guy email me with a good price on a MFI P&C, but I do not know what I have now. Thanks again...

To be sure, yes! Your engine type number would give a clue, but there were 3 DIFFERENT 'T' Pistons!!! And, if the seller doesn't know what he has???

Ill tell you what warren, if its not one thing, its always another. I guess I will have to live with a little smoke on start up until the house is done so Ill have someplace to tear it down. Why cant it ever just be an easy answer???;-)

Of course ... you could buy that used cylinder, have all of them bored out to 85mm or 86 mm, and put in a set of JE forged 9.5:1 forged pistons with valve reliefs and some GE-60 cams ...

Could I not do this with the set I already have, I believe the only issue with the one I have is a cracked or broken ring( so Ive been told twice)

Tom,

Yes, you can bore out your existing cylinders!

I thought you had a cracked, leaking cylinder ...

Ive talked to two people about it, based on my leakdown being 4-6 % on #`s 2-6 and #1 being 68% they both told me it was a ring problem most likely, no promise untill I pull the motor, but most likely based on there knowledge..

What were the compression numbers & other symtoms?

Were the head studs checked for tightness?

Hadn't your oil temps been over 250+ F ???

A cylinder head stud could have pulled ...

I think Warren may be suggesting further investigation and I agree. Perhaps you have done a thorough investigation, so forgive us.

First, a leakdown test should be repeated to be believed. Also, you can drop some oil into the cylinder to see if that seals the rings better.

If you're sure it's rings, then go ahead and take it apart. Only then will you know what kind of damage was done, and what type of pistons you have.

Tom,

That IS what I am suggesting ... more invetigation, or analysis of data!

For all you know, the two 'sources' may have conferred with each other.

Rings on an 8:1 'T' engine aren't that highly stressed. Unless you had audible detonation going on, I have doubts that a ring or rings in one cylinder just 'broke' ... it doesn't just happen randomly!
