*PPI's, bad choices, now a beater car...my ramblings about it...

I have loved Porsches since I got my first ride around pacific raceways at 16..
The ride was in a black 80's SC

Well I went tracking when I was old enough in my modified 325i. That was a great car but I lusted for a Porsche. So I found a mid year with SC flares and a SC motor¡K and promptly handed over too much for it.
But not before I got a PPI!!
I called a number a guy recommended ¡§joe\jon\jake walker¡¨ he couldn¡¦t remember the first name. It was a two week wait. I didn¡¦t want to wait. (bad idea) He recommended another guy on the eastside.. He¡¦s busy too. He recommends ANOTHER shop.. So I go with the third stringer¡K..
PPI says¡K it¡¦s a motor from a 79, it had collapsible this, and hydraulic that¡K 8% leak down¡K drives straight, shifts tricky like an old 915¡K
¡§PPI found out that it needs a new fuel pump...its leaking a bit from thermostat O ring, and the left rear sway bar drop link is broken. ¡§

the records do mention something about a repair... i had so many records i overlooked one like about a "Mick mouse repair" my parents also overlooked that little blurp records..

Turns out that the shop missed a few things..

The oil leak was from the 600$ oil cooler¡Kpinhole leak¡K that sucks¡K

Also turns out that its been crashed... hard...really hard...

I dont know if a PPI is supposed to cover this stuff¡K

I took it in recently to ¡§Air Cooleds Only¡¨ in Prescott az.

The guys pretty nice.. but within 5 seconds of popping the rear hatch he says ¡ looks like this one had a hard life¡¨

He shows me the wrinkled supports on the left and right of the motor¡K. Shows me how the bar(support\plate thing) that connects the motor mounts in the rear bow¡¦s around the motor¡K.the motor mounts are 1\2 an inch forward ¡K I didn¡¦t know that¡s not how it¡¦s supposed to be! The motor¡K if it ever comes out¡K will be very hard to get back in!!!

Just to make sure he destroyed my entire day.. The guy brings me over to his RS replica.. (Unfinished)

He shows me how he did his flairs ..nice... he says ¡ this is how you do it¡¨ ¡ your flairs are done the wrong way ... that bubble in the paint on you fender is because the bondo ..something. .moisture... something....¡¨ " reach under here and you can feel¨

So instead of overpaying for a mid-year I overpaid for a BROKEN POS midyear..
Moral of my ramblings?.. (this is really rambling) go with a trusted shop and maybe take it to a body shop too!! BLA! Frustrating.

The fact that I lost a 1\2 inch from the car makes it really difficult to install a BAE kit!

But now I have no problem bastardizing it.. I will track it till my flairs fall off!

"when looking for an older porsche the car you choose determines the quality of the ownership experience"

a quote from one of the many guys i talked to prior to buying my car. i took it as, if you buy a lemon you can't always just "make lemonaid", your experience is sour..

After my first car and 2 shops that didn't catch the damage on PPIs I have decided my cars now get a trip to the best body shop and alignment shops in the area before I buy.

Good ones (in either variety ) can tell you a whole lot more than most wrenches.

Sorry to hear about all this but at least you still seem to have an ironic sense of humor over the whole thing.

Loved the tour guide quote.

This about the funniest quote I've ever heard. Do you mind if I use this in my signature. Classic.

I like the part about " track it till my flairs fall off! " Definately a healthy outlook and one that will pay off well if you ever have an "incident" at the track involving another car or some immovable object. It's always a shame when you get the first scratch.

Mine ain't no virgin either.

Ya know...it sure looks nice.

If you like how it drives, and it's fun, and it's pretty, then don't worry about resale value. Enjoy it while you have it. Hell, you may as well keep the car forever. One of these days have a good body shop pull the car straight and it'll be good as new.

You bought it for enjoyment, so enjoy it.

I like the car.

One of the most important things to thouroughly check is the body. Most anything mechanical can be repaired ($$$) but accident damage that is not properly repaired is very $$$$$$.
On the later cars make sure that the o/e vin tags are still in place, I don't worry too much about minor accident repair, ie: just paint and a little fill for dings and dents is just cosmetics.
I know, this is after the horse......but for future reference...

drive that crap out of it - that's the best revenge. 1" further forward for the engine? some folks on this forum would spend big bucks to get their engine moved 1" further forward, you got it for free!

Seriously, drive the beast, if the wheels are real, then you have an appreciating part of the car right there!
