930 Oil Temp Question...

A question for 930 owners out there - how hot is your car running, both on the track & street ?

On a ~86F day, my oil temp needle would rest between 9:00 & 10:00 (i.e. between the 2 white marks to just under to top one). According to consensus, that puts it between 220-245F; which seems way too hot according to B. Anderson's book.

Have checked all the usual suspects - front oil cooler is working & cleaned, so as the oil tank in the back.

Am I being paranoid?

BTW, a bit more details on the temp - on the track, it almost peg at the 10:00 position (245F) and varies on the street depending on amount of idle time.

thanks,
Patrick.

On the street mine has been resting at 9:00 with temperatures around 90 degrees. I have never seen the second white line, even in stop and go traffic. I would also like to lower these temps. (Place Cool collar joke here). I think the front mounted unit is the way to go, but it means a new spoiler. Don't like that idea.

When I take my 930 on a normal summer-day the oil-temp always stays at 80 degrees and when I start to racing with it the temp goes up to 100 degrees.

But a normal summer day here in Sweden is about 20-22 degrees in the air so i guess that it´s a little varmer where you drive.

ummm... so it sounds like there's something not right in either my thermostat, oil line or cooler then

Have just removed the condensor from the engine bay & installed a cool collar! Will report how it works out in the next few days...

If you hear oil sloshing in front cooler and it feels hot then front cooler thermostat is probably OK.

Check for:

- pinched oil lines going to front oil cooler
- too lean mixture
- crud and dirt behind your fan, obstructing cooling fins
- dirty engine oil-cooler (pressure wash it underneath)

Good luck!

Hi beepbeep, thanks for the pointers...

I don't think I ever heard any sloshing sound, but have used an IR temp probe to test the 2 oil lines - 190 & 170 respectively. So it seems that oil is getting there at the right temp.

Mixture-wise, just had the car tuned & dynoed. The air/fuel ratio seems good to me (around 12 at full boost).

Will check the oil lines tomorrow...

A question though - is there anyway to test the effectiveness of the oil cooler? Can it degrade over time?

Cooler is a stupid thing...just heat exchanger made of metal, and if it "degrades" then it's just beacuse of dirt that got stuck there. So the answer is no.

If A/F ratio is OK then i would start checking other things. As i said, raise the car and use hight pressure water-hose to "blow" trough engine-mounted oil-cooler ... if you are unsure, replace internal thermostat that might be going bad.

Also, what kind of front oil-cooler are you using?? If it's just a couple of loops of brass pipe you might start considering installing a better unit.

Was car running this hot before or did it happend lately?

I have the "late carrera" cooler as they call it - the radiator type; but just realized that the previous owner had removed the fan in front (from what I was told, its might actually help if you are on the track?).

Have pressured-washed the engine recently completely to fix oil leak as well so maybe its time to replace some thermostats.

Since I got the car a few months ago, its been running at the 9:00 position (~220F) both street & track; but with rising ambiant temp. it gets hotter lately.
